Alfie Chant - Lame?

Folks:

Don't get me wrong this was great (well actually just ok) during the playoffs, when chanting at 11:11 mark. But here is the problem, and trust me most of my favourite moments ( almost brining me tears) is chanting ALFIE< ALIFE < ALIFE at SBP.

The best part is it - usually comes after he does some Alfie esque. Scores a big goal in the playoffs, makes a hit.... nowadays if he gets an assist I suggest it is almost ALFIE worthy.

Here is the problem with the chant, and I hope soon it goes back to just chanting to praise ALFIE.... I'm one of the biggest ALFIE supporters, and when at home - when I barely hear the ALFIE chant at 11;11 is sounds lame....oh so lame. Most times I have to go what are they saying? Or it's 11:00, trying to do the ALFIE chant again.

When I am at a game... I'm focused on the game - who sits there looking at the clock unless it's 5 min to go in a period? I'm too into the game to notice it's 11:30... get ready... ok here we go? Also most of the time the play has nothing to do with him, or the other team is in our end, pentalty kill...etc...etc usually a little bit into the chant a whistle goes and it is ruined.

My 2 suggestions - stop doing it and only when the time is right... Or why not when the sens hit the ice after a period ends... Do it at the beginning of a period, get them charged up... That is perhaps the best idea, and i kinda think we save that for when he's getting ready to hang them up.

So praise Alfie - but let's do it better - when it means the most!!!

I agree with the sentiment "if you're going to do something do it right" but considering the rep our home crowds get I'll take anything

I think its great if it happens after a great play or a great shift...

I think its incredibly lame to do it at 11:11... It comes off awful in the building..

Sens are getting pinned in their own end with Alfie on the bench and a lame Alfie chant breaks out? Makes no sense.

That's because people are getting confused. in the playoffs we counted down from 11:11 to 11:00 and then chanted Alfie this year everyone starts chanting Alfie at 11:11.

"The Sens crowd is the worst in the NHL" - Habs, Leafs fans etc.

"Guys, I know we have this fun chant thing and everyone involved really loves it, but its time to stop. Who are we kidding? Go back to sitting in silence." - Butthurt Sens fan who gives the stink eye whenever someone tries to enjoy themselves (you they're out there)

This!

It was fine for a short term deal but each period at 11:11? And I am the same - I am actually watching the game, not worried about what the time is in the period.

I bet he and the rest of the team think it is lame the way it is.

When everyone thought we might be seeing the last of alfie last year, yes, it was a worthy chant. Now that he's playing another season (possibly more) ill agree with the op. It is ridiculame

I like the the Sens as much as the next guy, probably more in fact. I watch as many games as I can, I follow team news, injuries, transactions, prospects, etc. With that said, what is with the hero worship? I like Alfie, without a doubt he's done amazing things for the franchise, but the guy is human. The chant was alright during the playoffs last year, but it's just played out this season. How about we figure something out that motivates the entire team rather than putting the spotlight on just one dude. If I were him I would find it embarassing by this point.

I can understand the fans appreciating what Alfredsson has done. But as pointed out, chanting the guy's name when the players are sucking and he is sitting on the bench is just plain lame - it's actually worse than that, it comes off as clingy, desperate and juvenile.

Peace, BB

The crowd shows some enthusiasm about something and the vocal minority try to quash it. Colour me shocked.

Yeah - you know what, i wish the crowd would do more, but let's make it well executed and part of a hockey game.

Like i wish we did more, for example I would love it if we started singing and chanting throughout a game - totally unique, bring some european flair. If we sang that silfverberg chant at some points in the game - would be so much fine.

But a half hearted chant - that has little relevance to the game, sometimes goes against the flow (If you can hear it).....boring.

It's quiet because people can't make up their minds this year. During the playoffs, it was understood that the countdown started at 11:11 and the chant started at 11. Now, people seem hell bent on starting the chant at 11:11. THAT'S off-putting. But the chant itself? Disagree. It's paying homage to a player who defines this franchise in what could be his last season.

As for the European-style chants: the RSU guys have tried it, it didn't catch on, and it was mocked for being quiet, having little relevance to the game, and for going against the flow. See a pattern here?

Ok - that's why I said we should do the chant at the faceoff of every period.... Look I'm all for paying homage to Alfie, absolutely love the guy.... But I want to do it the proper way, and you know what when he comes back when we hang his jersey... I will be there chanting loud and clear.... That will be a moment I will not miss!!!
But let's hope that's in a couple years, because I really think we could be a contender next year!!!

The crowd shows some enthusiasm about something and the vocal minority try to quash it. Colour me shocked.

It's not about trying to "quash" enthusiasm, but rather focusing that enthusiasm in the right direction. Some of these arguments about wanting to squash enthusiasm or limit people from enjoying themselves are akin to a kid getting mad at his parents because they disapprove of his choice in friends after they encouraged him to go out and meet people and make friends. The only problem was he made friends with criminals. His actions are misguided.

If I went to a game and started acting like a jackass, but wasn't hurting anyone or breaking any rules, people would want me to stop acting like jackass. When asked to stop I would then argue that people are just trying to stop me from having fun or showing excitement. It's not about limiting fun or excitement, it's about limiting lameness.

I'm all for chanting, cheering, chirping, etc. Even to the point where it's borderline aggressive. A rightly timed chant for the right reasons can give you goosebumps, but this "Alfie" chant isn't one of them.

I suggested this before, but why not save the chant for the 3rd period? Good for giving the boys some inspiration for that final period push.

That way we don't wear out the chant and the players have something to look forward to.

I agree with this 100%

Someone from the RSU use some of their club fees to take out a full page ad and explain the Alfie chant.

We count down from 11:11 and then chant at 11:00. There is a lot of confusion at the games. Save it for the third and lets keep practicing it.

Last year in the playoffs, it gave me goosebumps. So did the standing 2 minute ovation after Milo's goal in game 4 and the Andy chants that spontaneously erupted.

Last year's playoffs were the first that I ever felt like we had a "real" fanbase.
