All yall over reacting over a bad preseason game better get your butts in here and over react about one regular season game
I'm here. Don't think I was ever talking about 1 pre-season game. Always discussing his body of work.

I'm glad he looked better tonight.

I'm also not changing my opinion yet.

(Disclaimer: I am still hoping I AM WRONG about him)

If anyone needed a great first game, it was him. And he delivered. Best game I have seen from him since Round 1 vs the Penguins. If he brings this every game, there is zero chance he hovers around 40 points again. Especially with Panarin on his line. And as others said already, having a Kakko and Laf play even 75% to their potential changes the dynamic and landscape of this team.

I sincerely appreciate knowledgeable posts in this absolute bonfire of a thread. (and that is putting it very lightly)

I sincerely hope this sticks with Laf and Panarin. I hope Laviolette talked up Lafreniere in telling him to go attack and don't worry about fumbles and that the team is there for turnovers and just play your game, and he told Panarin that this isn't "New York TYPICAL!!!" in you choosing your linemates either. If Panarin awakes and embraces the young blood and they click - well I'm just going to call it a night because I ain't getting too far ahead of myself here.

i feel like they'll get a pretty lengthy leash to grow as a line - obviously a phenomenal start, which builds some equity that will offset any underwhelming to poor nights that might happen, at least in the near future. beyond that, it seems like lavi is pretty convicted on the (not exactly the riemann hypthesis) concept that the best version of this roster involves kakko and laf taking significant steps in their contributions. the other factor i think is pretty important is i've always gotten the impression panarin really likes laf and how he plays/thinks the game. it's almost the polar opposite of how he has never seemed to embrace playing with kakko, even during the brief stretches where they had success on a line. i still remember his reactions to questions about them heading into their rookie seasons respectively, where panarin was sort of politely complementary of kakko when he showed up but visibly impressed with what he'd seen of laf the next year. i'm optimistic about that adding some energy on his part to make that line work, and given his reputation for being fairly outspoken about who he wants to play with, it's an important factor.

i wasn't a big fan of the lavi hire admittedly, but i will say everything he's said, and by all accounts has done, since day one has been really impressive. for laf specifically i honestly think he could have a massive positive influence. all indications suggest he's got a great feel for balancing building trust with personal relationships and retaining a commanding presence with expectations.

It was all the Dunkin' run with Troubs posted yesterday morning.

Glad he channeled all the negativity in the press and within his own fanbase & showed that he's a pro whom has a ton of room to grow.

Very good things all around last night.

Not that I think he reads these boards but when people were laughing at him getting injured, as slight as it was, that was an eye opener. There’s some genuine hate for this kid on here. Luckily I don’t think it’s most people who have been down on him, but still… f***ed up.
Jamal Crawford used to read the NY Knicks board. I get the feeling another NY based pro (not hockey) who I wont name reads a board.

Give him back the assist NHL. You cowards
Laf won the battle, kept the puck in. I think there was a time gap before Panarin picks up the puck. Laf didn't get it directly to him. And then Panarin kind of creates the scoring play on his own, using Chytil as a pass decoy. I think unassisted goal was the right call. Though, yeah, I wish Laf got a helper for his troubles.

good for the kid that he scored first. it probably made the team go "he scored. holy shit!!! if he scored then we gotta get our shit in gear."

Let this kid go out and play

He looked comfortable out there, a lot more confidence and decisiveness in his game. Saw a few sweet dangles and he just missed converting on a few assists/shots as well. He shouldve been given an assist on Breads goal

Maybe his conversation with Lav loosened him up, although it was mentioned he had a few good practices leading up to last night.

Whatever the case it was really awesome for him to get the first goal, with all of the talk surrounding him during camp.

Would they consider converting him to center after his performance on faceoffs yesterday? We know Chytil can’t win them

Long term that would be amazing.

Especially with Perrault and Othmann still to come on the wing.

I was a fan of the Gallant hire. Not going to lie. But it is clear he had one mission, win at all costs. Our new coach clearly knows that tapping any untapped potential that Laf has can help lead him to the promise land.

I think it is more than abundantly clear.

In fact, I think despite the fact that they issued "the letter," that David Quinn either didn't get the memo or ignored it and tried to win too much too.

Both Gallant and Quinn clearly made too many decisions that did not grow the kids because they were too afraid to live with the mistakes.

This was also ridiculously dumb because the way to win was to let the kids make mistakes and then grow.

They shackled these guys. For a few extra meaningless wins 2-3 years ago, we are paying for it now.

Tbf to Quinn I blame the management/ownership for the fixation on making the playoffs. I think Quinn got told (his last season) that if he didn't make the playoffs he'd be out. He was in an impossible situation in that regard.

Were they dumb or did they allow us to sign them both to ridiculously cheap 2 year deals only to allow them to be bargains right now?
