Phenomenal contract for the Rangers, and I'm very happy to have him locked up long-term. He's not super vocal outside of the caged answers you usually get from players, but I give him a ton of credit for quietly going about working his ass off to improve his game the last two years, and it's paid off by him consistently being one of our best players night after night.

He's the future of this Rangers forward core, and he's earned it.

Drury did great with this contract but we need to remember this is buying rfa years and ufa years. This is not a ufa contract. It's still really solid business by Drury.

It also creates a little bit of a paradox. Right now players are applauding laffy for the deal. That kind of spits in Igor's face with what's going on there. Now laffys contract either can be viewed as leaving more money for Igor OR it turns into a thing that others attack Igor over based on what he is asking for in contrast to laffys deal.

The biggest issue for NYR is they don't have any other goalie options.

I am also curious now that this deal is done how long till laffy gets cycles into pp1. Would love to see him take the right half wall and move panarin to the left wall for a few games while mika sorts things out. The pp1 needs a lhs besides kreider somewhere bc it becomes too predictable as is against good teams without a one time shot threat anywhere besides the left dot

Shesty is all UFA years, Laf is not all UFA years. Laf will likely have another big contract after this (takes him to 30) and Igor probably will be done in the NHL after his next deal.

One is the best at their position in the league and the other isn't.

Big differences between the two, and neither should "take a discount to help the team"
I personally like when players take a little less to “help the team” I’d call it team friendly everyone wins Laf’s contract bought up 5 ufa yrs. 7.4 is a good contract for everyone involved.

Shesty is absolutely one of the best players at his position and was offered a contract that would have paid him like the best player at his position. Buying up 8 ufa years for 11 per. I’d say he got an offer that was not a “take a discount for the team” offer. That was a damn good offer is what it was.

I'm honestly amazed that Lafreniere’s getting the extension somehow gets connected to the immediate decision about PP1. THERE’S NO CONNECTION.

Both parties obviously see how goalie’s market turned out. The deal will get done. I think it won’t be much off the $11m so both sides will look like winners. $11.25x8

What am I missing? (I’m pretty hangover so it’s on me that the joke went over my head)
We originally offered Panarin 11 mil. When Vancouver bought out Spooner, we saved 600k, which we then offered to Panarin. So, if Spooner didn't suck so bad, Panarin would be paid less and Shesty would want less.

Great deal for both the Org and for Laf. Not surprised he said "fired up" because I see him as a monster breaking out. He's always played with fire.

EDIT: He was listed at 6'1", 193 lbs at the 2020 draft. He is now at 6'2", 196 lbs.

So you’re saying he’s not been putting time in the gym
No, I am saying that he’s gained an inch and a few pounds, which is good. I would, however, like to see him add a few more pounds of muscle. He’s got the frame to add a few while not losing agility. I just thought it was a somewhat interesting bit of info.

Are there any fancy stats showing how many chances he creates? I wonder how different it is from Panarin. He creates so many chances and unlike Chytil who so too he's a better finisher.

I always thought this captain talk was a little premature but I heard some of Laffy’s press meetup and i was impressed with his poise and command of English.

Perhaps
There was some commentary from edge around when we drafted him, that the org had thoughts that he reminded them of a young messier. Thats where my talk of it stems from.
