We have seen that already this season.

Kakko was looking extremely well before playing through a broken bone in his wrist, and Laf has looked much better than the first half of the season.
Greg Gilbert was on a line with bossy and trotter and scored 30 plus goals. He sucked as a scorer

He gets an assist once a month when the puck accidentally hits his skate. When he sets up his teammates for high danger shots 3 times per game, he gets nothing. The good news is our guys are keeping him cheap. Lets get the next contract signed ASAP.

If Laf was as good as this thread keeps making him out to be, he'd be making his own luck. There were a plethora of amazing passes tonight and goals by players you would never think would get goals, but yet another game Laf gets a goose egg. Laff has passed the number of games he played last season and is 2 points behind his first mark at the time and 25 PIM more.

But GG Laf.

Cool

he was really good all around last night, points would be more fun and sucks hes not getting them but itll happen. had a phenomenal pass through traffic to a cutting miller for a great chance in the slot that didnt go, made a nice play to get to a puck and perfectly weighted a pass for kreider to skate into on a breakaway he didnt finish. those were 2 of the best passes anyone made all night, the miller one prob the best.

not to compare the 2 and he played very well last night, but look at panarin putting up 5 points. most of them were fairly benign movements of the puck that didnt have much to do with the goal...really none of them. the point isnt to take away from panarins night as he too was good and on the puck a lot which helps production - my point is those nights and points will come for laf if he continues on this track. hes shown the ability and were seeing a lot of progression lately, just part of the process.

also doesnt help we dont have an ideal setup for him. this line can work and the best spot for him now but hes a kid on his off wing - hes clicked with the line coming up ice and they create a lot of chances that way, but in the zone theres not the same chemistry / coordination. they keep the puck on the walls and even when winning one its either up to the point or roll it around for another wall battle. they havent put together an attack that finds chances in the middle the way strome/panarin can at their best. thats where laf and mika need to find a way to generate. laf will be awesome there, and he can improve, but the lack of that presence falls more on mika than him

Yeah, I get the frustration on the point stats, but watching the game this morning on my DVR, I could see the progression. Not going to repeat 2014nyr‘s points, but I agree. Also played physically again and decent D.
Honestly not worried. Going to be an excellent player.

You still want to see more production. --said every HFBoards poster ever
You see Lucas Raymond and Matt Boldy becoming valuable contributors in their first NHL seasons. Those guys aren't more talented than Alexis Lafrenière and Kaapo Kakko. Our boys are still trying to find themselves in the NHL.

You see Andrei Svechnikov becoming a top line NHL player. When the Rangers took Vitali Kravtsov 9th that draft, Gordie Clark said Kravtsov was the 2nd best forward in that draft after Svechnikov. Our boy is playing in the KHL.

It’s very frustrating.

7 and still no points.
I know.

I promise myself, I am never going to check his points, again, but then he has a (relatively) big game and I get my hopes up. Then he disappears from the score sheet for a couple weeks.

On the plus side, you could have drafted Byfield.

Byfield is still a year younger than Laf, is being groomed to play the most difficult forward position as a big two-way Center, and is recognized by his organization that he needs to get both NHL and AHL minutes to get his game and confidence up.

It's probably better to compare players from Laf's draft class that are at, above, or near his points and then look how many games it took for them to get there.

For as much shit as I give Laf, it's not beyond me to say that this organization is shit with developing new, young players.

Fair enough.

As a Canadian, I want both LAF and QB to succeed in a BIG(!!!!) way.

It’s tough to say because at the end of the day players still have free will when they step on the ice. If Laf or Kakko could take the puck and split the D and deke out the goalie, they’d be doing it. They’ve gotten plenty opportunity. Coaches aren’t going to give them shit for flashing skill and scoring, no matter how much fans try claiming the contrary

Agree!! As long as you aren't being flashy and turning the puck over for odd man rushes against, natural scorers and support players will find ways to put points on the board. I would argue that Kakko has more skill in his hands than Laf, but both of them seem like they never want to shoot. I think that's the mentality of this team. Pass first. I mean, we had a player last game in the slot by himself and he opted to pass and turn it over.

A LOT of arbitrary rules for comparison here.
Byfield is from the same draft class of course we can compare them even if he’s about 10 months younger. If he was a NYR the people making excuses for him would be calling him a bust. Personally I think he will be fine. (and Laf too).
Only compare players from that draft that are above or near Laf’s points? Why? Because you think that’s a more efficient way to downgrade him? You can’t just eliminate things that don’t support your agenda. Hahaha. l mean you CAN, but it’s extremely silly and not rational.
Watching people contorting themselves to shit on Lafreniere now that he’s making progress is wildly entertaining. People do the same with Kravtsov, Nils and Kakko, just not necessarily the same people. Posters get their favorites and then piss on any prospect that other people might think is a better one. It’s bizarre, like its a zero sum game: there can be only one! Guess what? This ain’t Highlander, there can be LOTS of good prospects and that doesn’t make your favorite any less of one. Hahaha.

Also amazing how Lundell, Raymond, Höglander, Stützle, Seider etc didn't have to "adjust to the smaller rink" proving it's a bullshit argument.

He should have more assists and has gotten unlucky on setups.

At the same time, he never gets the Panarin Special were somebody else makes the play after Panarin touched it, and you're like "I didn't even know Panarin was on the ice." Fox gets some of these as well.

Granted, a lot of those are on the powerplay, so good luck, kid.

How are you defining progress? What progress? People keep saying he's making progress, but he looks exactly the same as he did last year at this time, and with less points to show for it.

Look, if you people want to pat Laf on the back for making plays 90% of the NHL can do anyway, then have at it. He's a #1 pick that can/should be criticized.

He doesn’t look the same as he did last year. That’s nonsense. Hahaha.
Hes 5th on his team in goals scored, like second at even strength, no? That’s the average NHLer? Never mind 90% of the NHL. And he’s played what 113 career games? This just shows your bias. What’s the play of the average player in his D+2 year? How many from his draft class have even made the NHL for 20 games. These are just the facts. I haven’t even patted him on the back. Saying someone is showing progress is hardly over the top. Haha. Listen, if he is in D+4 and still scoring 15 a year, I’ll be disappointed. But even 22 year olds still have room to break out. Sure “criticize.” Say whatever you want. But don’t be surprised if people disagree with it. This whole labeling any 20 year old a bust is ridiculous. And a 20 year old with 13 goals on a pace for about 20? Come on. Hahahaha.
