Kent is absolutely cutthroat when weaponizing cap space in trades (Laine, Monahan), but is average when taking shots at young, "underdeveloped" talent (Dach, Newhook, Barron). Let’s hope the trend continues with this trade.

This is a good point about Monahan. They weaponized their cap space and came out like bandits with Monahan. The Lehkonen deal also helped them finish at the bottom and got a second which allowed the Hage trade. I'm bummed at just how bad Barron has been though. I do think they've tried to accumulate as many puck movers as they could hoping at least one would hit, which seems to be Hutson.
I think it had more to do with the long term (build) vision and balance.
Barron had all the attributes of a potential solid top 4 RD when we acquired him.
People were commenting on how good he looked when he first came up and until he got injured.
The fact that he couldn't give us top 4 minutes even temporarily did him in.
While Reinbacher's injury could have been seen as an opportunity it was also a death knell for Justin Barron.
Logan Mailloux needs to pay attention and realize he needs to crack a top 4 position down the road.
Because if not there are no guarantees if you are seen as a weak defender.

Those comments are from people who aren't watching anyone playing.

My favorite comments are those who are saying "what happens if Barron turn into a star". Good for him and the Preds, but the Habs are trading the Barron of now, the one who's been stalling the last 2 season, who get sit so MSL can play the 2 inches shorter more physical dmen who's main quality at the draft was "greek god body".
There is only one way to look at player movement are we better now than before the transaction.
The jury isn't out but all signs point to yes unequivocally.
Whatever Barron becomes in the future is no longer relevant in terms of where we are heading.

This season Kovacevic is better than Carrier, but we will see. You might be right in the end.
This hardest thing for people to grasp is just how much role and perfect fit come into play when assessing a player.
Jonathan looks very good in a pure big body shut down role with a experienced Siegenthaler and a proven forward group.

We have a specific role we need Carrier to fill and ultimately it is one we didn't feel Kovacevic would be capable of.
Who knows what would have happened if we had tried him with Guhle as a top pairing shut down duo but well Matheson was in the way.
That was never going to be Marty's game to begin with.

his gift is knowing contracts and money... needs to lean more on scouts for young deal trades

I would say that might be more of a pro scout/ junior scouts fault

They probably said the player had good potential.

Did the interview with Carrier not have a single English reporter, or did I zone out and miss all of it ?

When you trade for magic beans, it is inevitable that some moves are not going to work out. Teams would value their better prospects even higher if they had so much assurance that their magic beans would grow into something great especially when you consider how those players are so friendly from a cap perspective versus what the "buyers" typically acquire.

At the end of the day, even first round picks are a coin flip at best.

That is why it is important to compile draft capital/prospects with the knowledge that some guys are inevitably not going to work out, otherwise you will not have acquired enough of it.

Hard to judge him on Dach, before his injury, EVERYONE was calling it a steal.

I was never a fan of the Barron or Newhook.
Dach, yes, and still hopeful.

Hard to give up on Dach.........and anyone for that matter at the age of 22-23...............they are still kids.

As for Barron, the kid did regress no doubt about it. It was a good gamble but it didn't work.
Carrier seems to be a nice recovery and we can move on from Barron, but our cap space took a hit, albeit not a big hit. Not to mention cap space is fine once we get rid of some vets at the deadline, the salary retention will be gone, and the cap goes up next year 4-5 M and possibly even more.

It was all french speaking people there. There was an article a few weeks ago about there being a lot less journalists traveling with the team these days. That probably mean they pick their games and a one night trip to Detroit and back wasn't interesting any of the Anglo journo.

I would argue the shots he took on young players all made sense at the time he took them. Like I said in another thread, you pretty much have to try a few home run swings if you're not a big UFA destination.

Shouldn't a best run organization...win? What makes an organization good if it's not on wins and success?
Define “win”?

Win & success are NOT one & the same - I guarantee you Molson defines success very differently from Joe Fan and Jeremy Jacobs / Jim Dolan very differently from Molson etc

Not sure about that, seems to me that getting a good defensive D on the right side with help the team way more than Mathy, we already have Hutson taking care of the offense.

LD: Hutson-Ghule-Xhekaj
RD: Savard-Carrier-xxxx

Don't know if possible to get that stable RD for Matheson alone tho, but it's worth the try imo.
I would suggest with that projected defence Montreal will remain more a pretender than a contender for the near future.

IMO, the plan is to really compete after Gallagher, Anderson, now Carrier and Price contract are up. It would leave us with 3 years of Suzuki, 4 years of Caufield, 4 years of Guhle and 6 years of Slaf. While still getting contribution from ELC players like Demidov, Hage, Fowler, etc. Of course they'll have to resign Hutson and a bunch of others, but we shouldn't have dead weight contracts like we've had the past 4-5 years (Dvorak, Armia, Hoffman, Gallagher, Anderson, Petry were all very bad value contract given under Bergevin that Hughes inherited)

Thats pretty sad that those things give you happiness. I hope you can find joy in actual joyful things.

It's hockey, its in my blood it sure does make me happy when a player I hate get rocked.

Don't worry I find happiness in a lot of things actually :)

I expect Price contract will be moved after next July 1st bonus payout, freeing up close to $10M AAV

It's not healthy to hate Justin Barron. What did he ever do to anyone? He's trying to realize his NHL dream.. he never disparaged the organization. He never cost us a big game. He never said anything hurtful or negative. He's a good kid.

It’s definitely worth asking why and how Barron stagnated. We have too many young players not progressing at the same time — some troubleshooting and deducting is in order.
The repeated concussions as the biggest factor would be my guess. Just a single one can have long lasting impacts, he had, what, 4 or 5 in two years?

Yes, that’s fine. But they all look like poor trades now. We can’t really judge the winner/loser of a trade the day of.

I'm just saying it can be all of the above. A. Those were moves that were worth trying at the time B.They didn't pan out as we hoped C. Trading Barron now was ultimately the right choice.
