He'll get 2nd PP duties behind Josi. He's a player they actually need. There's very little offense behind Josi, so I'm sure they're hoping that's what he'll provide. From our end, we needed a veteran RD who can defend.

With Hutson & Matheson on the team and Engstrom & Mailloux in Laval Barron was no longer a need. He was when we got him, though.

At that time, we only had Mailloux in OHL. Nothing in Laval. We would draft Hutson & Engstrom in 2022 draft, and trade for Matheson in summer of 2022.

Not to mention drafting Reinbacher in 2023.

Barron was obsolete from that day forward unless he took off, which he never did.

Now do HuGo’s

When Carey Price is healthy:

This board has pretty much planted their flag that the best move was to keep Kovacevic and waive Barron.

Instead Hughes gets a 4th and Carrier.
Given our imbalance add our inexperience on RD with Struble still being waiver eligible I'm not sure what the rush was to move Kovacevic?
I get the vision but the foresight wasn't on point.
I guarantee you that will never happen again when we have that flexibility.
It was actually out of character for HuGo who up until then had bent over backwards to keep 3 goaltenders and Ylonen the previous year.
It's not like he was going to get a better return moving him over the summer?

Reinbacher’s injury screwed up the plan a tad. They were expecting him to make the team from the start.

I dunno if they expected him to start, but they certainly had big plans for him as the season progressed, his injury really threw a wrench into that.

Kovy was moved before the Reinbacher injury, and they really needed to get a good look at Barron. You're right they're more likely to be more cautious in the future, but I don't fault the logic at the time. (this year was always about transition, growth and examination)

Either way a 4th and Carrier for a waiver pickup and Barron isn't that bad. Carrier is a much better fit anyway.

Hence why I said I get the vision but not the foresight.
We were relying on a raw rookie with 11 games of AHL experience and Barron to fill that hole.
We still had Harris at that point so I guess they felt either he or Struble would spell Barron.

The rush was you were either going to waive Barron (makes no sense), Xhekaj (even less sense), or force Struble down to the AHL level when he had played his way onto the NHL team.

They couldn't go into camp with 9 NHL D. Kovacevic was a 7th D for us last year, they weren't going to bend over backwards to keep him on the roster.

Even with injuries to Reinbacher, trading Harris and Kovacevic, they were having trouble getting enough ice to Xhekaj Struble and Barron.

Kovy being moved was a foregone conclusion months in advance imo. The writing was very much on the wall. Logically it made sense, but it's still a lesson learned, Struble could have been moved to the A if needed. RHD is a need, the fly in the ointment was Reinbacher's injury.

Either way it worked out in the end. I prefer Carrier over Kovy.

Struble had not played his way onto anything.
He was very much susceptible to being demoted just like any other kid depending on camp.
Had we not made the Laine deal and we still had Harris in the fold Struble likely would have been sent down.

Struble was excellent last season after being called up. He was miles better than Kovacevic.

They were not gonna hold back their own young guys for Kovacevic.

The hindsight shit on Kovacevic needs to end. He contributed to a bottom 5 finish last year and is having a good year in an extremely favorable situation which involves him blocking the play of Nemec, which I'm sure would have been met with vicious angst on this board if it were us doing that.

When comparing salaries...debatable.

But given I think Kova is a UFA, he's probably going to sign a deal similar to what Carrier signed last offseason anyway.

Like you said, no biggie but a lesson learned.

I'm talking player wise in regards to Carrier vs Kovy. He just fits better with how this team wants to play and is the superior player. As you said Kovy is in for a raise as well.

There was an imbalance to begin with and it persists today.
The glut was always on the left side and we all know it.
It was a mistake it happens and I was no Kovacevic super fan believe me.

True enough. I liked Kovacevic, he was a nice surprise and I thought solid bottom pair Dman. But thats the thing. We know few guys are NHL material, and fewer guys are average players and fewer still are top 4D. Xhekaj, Struble and Barron are all younger guys and with Barron especially there was upside above a bottom pair D man. We are rebuilding, you go with upside where the risk is losing a bottom pair D man. Moving Kovacevic was the right call, just as trading Barron had become inevitable. This does set things up as a Struble v Xhekaj on the bottom pair battle, at least for now. Carrier stabilizes that pairing with a good vet.

I feel like even thought this was a small "addition" to the team, it may have a huge impact on us winning more games. Carrier fills such a blatant hole that we had. He can eat a bunch of minutes and so far looks super reliable. It's really hard to win with a sketchy d-core.

We weren't holding back anything have a camp before you dump because SHIT HAPPENS.
Particularly with Dmen hindsight or not it was a mistake end of story.
