This insulates moving on from Savard and increases the experience level in the short term.

Barron has plenty of tools but he is likely getting passed by Mailloux and Reinbacher.
Precisely what I thought. Impossible the Habs pass on a Savard deal by the deadline. Even if they are in the hunt, I understand you gotta play the game to know who wins, I still strongly feel this is the last of the transition seasons towards having a competitive team. Having extra assets to move for established veterans that fill holes (who says Savard doesn’t re-sign in the offseason to keep his family close and his kids in French schools here) that help them next year in their bid to become competitive and dare I say push them into a contender window soon after?!

It’s fun to have optimistic thoughts about the Habs again!

Nahhhhhh...

Many posters have me convinced now,

Kent did a fantastic deal on paper.....

Think about it,

A FORMER 1ST round drafted player, AND a 2nd!

Incredible value.

Kent is a genius.
Should Hughes have known when he made the trade with Sakic that Barron would spin his wheel? If he did, it was also a mistake at the time. IDK. Some fans still think we’re making a mistake giving up on a three year older Barron.

This. And, posters seem to ignore the cap realities...

Extending Lekhonen would've been difficult given where our awful Bargainbin cap situation was... and likely would've precluded the Monahan deal.

People act like trades occur in a vacuum, but the reality is that a GM needs to balance a wide range of risks/rewards with every move.
Lehky wouldn't be anything in MTL. Kent lost this one, but Hage might make it worthwhile. Now, he needs to fix Dach and Newhook.

In Kent We Trust.

Everything else is just noise.

Wasn't something that could have been predicted but yeah that's an opportunity cost that would hurt not being able to take advantage of.

It's also why I'm a bit lukewarm on the current deal. We didn't get any sort of sweetener for taking on Carrier's cap hit which is a bit disappointing. Sure it's not a big enough hit that we can't make future moves but who knows what series of events are now closed off.

Carrier kinda gives us back what we lost in Harris. Undersized defensive dman who can move the puck decently well.

He's a right shot who can handle Top 4 minutes a lot better than Barron. Barron was struggling being insulated on the 3rd pairing and he wasn't able to bring much offense because he's not good enough to have on the PP.

This move should give us more stability defensively, and allows us to deal Savard at the deadline for more futures.

I think Carrier will work out here. Too bad for Barron, has a lot of tools just never quite to put everything together. He's like a right-handed Beaulieu.

Yup. Part of good management is keeping/creating buffer where possible... Just like building a strong reputation among players/agents.

Not an easy thing to quantify, nor a guarantee that an immediate or direct benefit, but a very important part of the "art" of management that is hard to grasp for many (including many managers, Bergevin being a prime example).

Fair. There seems to be a solid fit on the character, play style and of course personal culture background that added to Carrier's appeal to the team. I'm sure all of that played into the trade negotiations from the Habs pov and what they settled on.

If Carrier can step in and by next season be giving us solid/reliable 2nd pair RD minutes, his cap hit will be a net benefit... Keep in mind that the cap increase this summer will significantly boost the contracts of depth players this summer. I bet the cap comparable RDs signed in the summer will be far lesser players.

Your problem is you're looking at Lehkonen now.

You're not looking at the Lehkonen the Habs traded. A dude who NEVER broke 20 goals.

A player who's career high was 31 points.

A player who broke 15 goals ONCE and that was in his rookie season.

Now, if I told you the Habs were trading a 2nd and Mesar for a player who's a two-way player, who's scored more than 15 goals once and that was 5 years prior, broke 30 points once and that was 3 years prior are you thinking that's a great trade ?

Exactly.

Beaulieu was an overconfident jackass.

Barron lacks confidence.

Wouldn’t the limitations you stated plus his missed playing time /injury history act as mitigating factors in the negotiation of a long term deal, thus putting some downward pressure on the ultimate contract amount?
Nah goals trump everything else. If he pots 45+ next year he has two or three comparables in the league.

Play Carrier first pairing with Hutson.

He gave Lehkonen though
How does lehks contract fit into the cap space Bergy left him? Lehk and Toffoli were casualties of so many unmoveable vets.

To paraphrase someone super wise “you can never too many undersized defensemen”.

I just love the guy energy. Seems like a cool dude and really happy to be here. And he's no slouch albeit a bit small, he plays much bigger than Harris did. He's a seasoned vet, good defensively and reliable. Good trade considering I really gave up on Barron.

You can't couple Savard with Hutson either he's a 3rd pairing guy now. I think they got Carrier because they like him and he can support the offense. Probably to play with Xhekaj or Guhle. They'll likely look for a partner for Hutson next summer anyway this is what i would do. I think it's would be advisable to acquire a top 4 capable of playing defense to pair with Hutson.
In due time this will be Reinbacher. My take is Carrier will fall to 3rd line duty when Reinbacher is ready, which gives us a lot of time and ensure we're patient with Rein.
