Came here to see how Romanov was doing since the trade, as I don't catch many Islander games. Sounds like his play is similar to his habs days, physical, mobile d with room to improve and needs to fix his play under pressure. Still think you guys got a good one, miss him in MTL. Good luck!

dissapointed in his season. Man did the Hab fans hype this guy up. Not sure if he is fighting something off the ice, but he has been real bad as of late eh?

Someone asked awhile ago if we'd be better off with Greene and Chara. I retorted that at season's end it would be a wash

He looks completely lost out there. Maybe the worst hockey IQ on the team. We really need to re-tool the blue line as well. Pelech and Pulock deals do not look nearly as good without Trotz.

I'm not sure if it was the acquisition cost, or the fact that he has so many games as a 22 year old dman, but he's just ok. Makes far too many mistakes for a player who does nothing offensively. Not great at break outs. Not great in the offensive zone. He's physical and blocks shots. A bottom pair defenseman on a good team. You guys have definitely won the trade thus far. Could be an unpopular opinion on this board though. Many of the posters here tend to overrate our players.

I am confused to see so many posters down on Romanov with only 185 games played in the NHL. We have seen plenty of times here on the island defenseman come through and struggle until around that 300 game mark. Dobson still is 92 games away from 300.

Romanov may not currently be a middle pairing defenseman night in and night out but he will be. His game becomes even more important in playoff type games. This is why in my opinion earlier on in the season it felt like he was making more of an impact.

So what's the viewpoints of you all? Why or why not is Romanov going to be a middle pairing defenseman? And for those of you who think the 13th pick should have gotten a current middle pairing guy, who should that have been?
We would've been better off signing a Calvin de Haan, and using that pick for a forward of some sort. I just find it really hard to see any sort of skill from him. Worst of all, his hockey IQ is brutal. Defensively, he's constantly out of position on backdoor plays and constantly takes the wrong man. His gap control is decent. Offensively, most times he touches the puck, any chance of an offensive opportunity dies.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I think the 13th overall pick was all that valuable. Teams tend to overvalue these lottery tickets. It's that it could've been spent elsewhere while saving 1.75 mil on someone else. Romanov is a league minimum type of dman. I really wish I saw something different, but I just don't.

I think Romanov will be a middle pairing defenseman when it is all said and done. I see a physical player who goes out and wants to be defensively responsible along with a physical aspect that is good to have.

Not for nothing but I’m honestly more disappointed in Dobson’s season.

The offense will return and likely get better. His defense though, ugh

From what I remember of him(I'm old) he would often cough up the puck under the slightest pressure in our end and was routinely caught out of position. He is one of the best hitters in the league though and is as solid as a tank, most of us would love to have kept him but Hughes saw enough in Guhle to let him go. He might need a few more years before coming into his own. We overrate our players as well lol.

Not for nothing, but Kasparaitis used to cough up the puck and get caught out of position. But his positives far outweighed his negatives.

The defensive aspect of the game is harder to learn. Defense is usually just hard work, reading the play, and understanding the system being deployed. The difference between Dobson and Romanov though is huge. One has a natural skill set with the puck and stick. Dobson moves better and overall has better instincts. It's his attention to detail that's lacking. Romanov has the same issues, but does not have the same hockey IQ or skill set. He has Mayfield-like tools when Mayfield broke into the league. At this point, I think that's what Romanov's ceiling is. Hurts to give up a 1st round pick and then overpay him (2.5 is too much for a player of Romanov's ilk; he's bee replacement level at best this year). I hope he's a better value in the next 2 seasons.

No question I agree that Romanov’s ceiling is a problem. I’d say we thought we were getting a second pairing guy with 1B upside. Now he’s playing like a third pairing player with a second pairing ceiling.

As for Dobson, his offensive skill set will mature I suspect. My concern is his lack of physicality. He can get stronger yes, but I worry that he’s just innately passive.

Kaparaitis' positive was he savaged Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr whenever he could.

Dobson really misses Zdeno Chara, eh?
