Player Discussion Alexander Ovechkin (Vol. 4)

Sounds like he might stay past next season if his game holds up.

I think he should go for 1000 as long as he’s not a liability out there.

Exactly what I’ve been saying. He loves the team, he loves to compete, they are a good/great team…..why would he walk away from that? Especially if he pots another 35-40+ goals next season?

He won’t. I think he’s got 3yrs total left. But that’s just my opinion.

Yeah three years takes him to 1000 at a moderate pace. I think so too.

The third time in a little over a week after he broke the record that he’s talking about playing past his current contract. I think given the reality of the situation and celebration, it has put things into perspective for him and he is on the brink of changing his mind about heading back to Russia to play after next year (which he mentioned tens of times, even as recently as a little less than two weeks ago), as long as his body stays healthy.

I've always thought he'll play in the NHL as long as possible for family and because that's who he is.

Once he's no longer at the level he can contribute in a way that matches the salary and roster spot he'll likely demand, he'll retire. That could be 2 years or it could be 5 years.

Whether or not he goes to RU to play depends on waaaaay too many other factors (family, geopolitics, league dynamics, opportunities in the USA, etc).

Enjoy it while it lasts.

If Alex's body holds up next year and he pots ~35 and the team is good, I'd offer him 2 years x $8M to stick around and chase 1,000.

There is no point in physically playing in KHL for him at this stage, I think.

He's a superstar in Russia as it is. Many ppl (including high profile) are looking for news if he scored or not every morning. What else he can do?

KHL ice is bigger and it will be hard for him. 1 game for retirement purposes will be enough. Full season? For what? I have my doubts. If he will play 1-2 more seasons and retire closer to 1000 (or even beat it - sounds f.n crazy tbh) - everyone in Dynamo will be happy. I mean, 1000, think about it. It kinda looks unreal even more than 895 looked.

He has a big hockey school complex being constructed in Moscow right now, as far as I understand it will be soon ready. So lots of things to be busy with in Moscow after retirement and without playing for Dynamo.

PS: Last, but no the least, his sons. That's a big factor too I guess. It makes it worth to score again and again.

I see he’s a minority owner (35%) with 2 other investors. You see him taking an active role in running that school? I’d be surprised if that’s his next step, but maybe….

Whatever Ovechkin adds to this next season is just gravy at this point.

Most NHL goals from age 30 and on:

Ovechkin - 422
Howe - 415
Esposito - 409
Bucyk - 374
Selanne - 338
Brett Hull - 328
Dionne - 321
Messier - 314
Jagr - 306
Gartner - 304

Most NHL goals from age 33 - age 40 seasons:

1) Ovechkin - 290 *
2) Bucyk - 274
3) Howe - 263
4) Brett Hull - 224
5) Selanne - 201

* Ovechkin plays his age 40 season in 2025-26

35 goals a year for three years gets him to 1000. If he's able to pot 40+ next season, why not come back for at least one year and see if he can crack 30? If yes, one more season to hit 1000 and ride off into the sunset.

Classy. Interesting note about Malkin. Didn't realize they were so close.
Are they though? Watched a video from that exchange and it doesn't look like ovi really acknowledged Malkin at all seemed most his attention was towards Sid. Granted it was a short video but still looked almost like he wasn't at all worried about malkin also being a part of it.
