I doubt Ovie was going to end up with the Richard this year regardless. And he is already the greatest pure scorer of all time in my view.

I mean, I am going to be really happy when he breaks Gretzky's NHL record, but in terms of just the number, if you include WHA goals, he has a pretty long way to go to catch Gretzky (940) and Gordie (975).

we've got 9 games the next 3 weeks, if he's back for the Dec 12 game that would be 24 days/9 games missed; hope he's back before then; who knows, with Matthews not even on this continent right now and a little love from The Hockey Gods OV could be right back in the race for 43/50/Rocket/900 this season

Thu, Nov 21 vs Colorado 7:00 PM
Sat, Nov 23 vs New Jersey 7:00 PM
Mon, Nov 25 @ Florida 7:00 PM
Wed, Nov 27 @ Tampa Bay 7:30 PM
Fri, Nov 29 vs New York Isles 3:00 PM
Sat, Nov 30 @ New Jersey 7:00 PM
Tue, Dec 3 vs San Jose 7:00 PM
Fri, Dec 6 @ Toronto 7:00 PM
Sat, Dec 7 @ Montreal 7:00 PM
Until seeing some Canadian hockey telecasts between periods didn't know the Matthews injury was so mysterious.

Nobody cares about WHA numbers…nor KHL numbers.

The Rocket wasn’t the prize, it was another 50g season, a historical 10th (and the obvious).

Hasek is in politics now in Czech Republic. So of course he hates everything coming from Russia.

.... everything but money. I suppose it wasn't a problem for him to play for Spartak Moscow and taking big $$$

I get eternal satisfaction knowing Hasek’s name is forever etched in Ovi’s list of victims. Their careers didn’t overlap much at all, but Ovi still found a way to sneak one past him :D

Ovi should send him a “Thank you” bottle of vodka once he breaks the record

No one does, yes I recognize that. But, if you're a fan of Gordie, or Gretzky, well, they were in a professional league that had players like Gordie and Gretzky and there were some other names. I didn't think of the WHA like I think of the KHL, at the time. Though I don't really think of the KHL at all, so, anyway...

Part of the WHA is part of the NHL now. And I just looked this up, but in exhibition games against WHA teams, the Caps won twice and lost four times. The NHL as a whole went 22-34-7 against WHA teams.

I think Gordie still has something to brag about until someone gets 976.

The other aspect to consider is how long 9 and 99 played in total. Gretzky started at 18, as opposed to Ovi who started at 20.

Howe played until he was past the age of 50. If Ovi were to play even to 45, he’d be way beyond 1,000 goals.

That doesn’t even account for the fact that Ovi had to deal with two lockouts and a pandemic.

Ironically, passing with Gretzky in terms of all pro leagues goals will be easier for AO with his 55 Russia+KHL goals.

Your comment and that 'not on the continent' remark made me suspect he went to Tibet to try some arcane traditional stuff, not just visited an expert in Germany.

Well you see the immediate response…..KHL goals don’t matter but WHA do….

It’s clear bias…..truth is…..neither matter.

The record being chased is the all-time NHL goal scorer…..not the top goal scorer in any professional league.

You would be hard pressed to find a bigger 99 fan than me, (and who didn’t love Howe) but those WHA goals simply don’t matter when the record being chased isn’t the all-time leader in goals in all professional leagues.

Gordie can brag all he wants, but he lost this title a long time ago.

Ovechkin will probably break the NHL record, then pad his cumulative professional stats for a few years in the KHL.

To be honest, I think there’s no injury that would keep him from trying to get 30 goals to beat the record at this point

He is a beast and he will come back and get it

Yep. It's more disappointing that it happened right as he was getting probably back to back hatties and ruined his RIchard and 50+ chance, which would have been epic in the season he breaks the record.

not if the only sports statue builder guy is the one from the Heat.

They can do one with the helmet on in his shooting motion from his office without having to really do anything with his face. Statue faces always look weird, and Ovi's is not a face you want to caricaturize. ;)

those WHA goals simply don’t matter when the record being chased isn’t the all-time leader in goals in all professional leagues.

Yeah, and if people want to put that type of asterisk next to this record, they'll have to deal with the obvious counter that Ovi missed a shit-ton of games in his prime to lockouts.

I don't think we'll hear much of that type of squawking. The thing the haters have already focused in on are the empty netters.

Gordie can brag all he wants

No, he can't.
