Value of: Alex Vlasic in a trade

I don't see Vlasic ever hitting 50 points.

Especially if he doesn't get PP time and most likely he won't with Rinzel and Levshunov getting PP1 and PP2 in the Hawks 4+1 PP alignment.

Using Toews probably wasn't a good comp - good point - but my point was that he is a solid top pairing guy who can be effective at partnering with a true #1 offensive d-man.

If Vlasic is a #3 or 4 Dman on any team in 3 to 5 years then I expect that team to be a SC contender.

That's fair. It's also fair to suggest he could hold down a top-pairing role on a SC contender, especially if the Hawks have a RHD partner for him to provide the scoring punch that is probably higher than Vlasoc is capable of.

If the stars align and the Hawks are fortunate to get the top draft position - there's a strong argument for the Hawks to select BPA which is probably LHD Schaefer even though LHD is not an area of need. In that case Vlasic would most likely be on the 2nd pairing with either Rinzel or Levshunov - whichever one is not on the top pairing with Schaefer.

So to me you have...

Schaefer - Rinzel
Vlasic - Levshunov

Who is the clear # 4 out of that group?

If the Hawks get the #1 pick they should be all-in-on Schaefer as he projects that well.

If all of them pan out? That's like saying Ekholm was clearly the #4 when Nashville had him, Josi, Ellis, and Subban all in their prime. That's just simply a ridiculous D-core, any one of those 4 guy on Nashville would have been 1st pair just about anywhere else in the league

I'm not always a "BPA no matter what" guy - I think there can be circumstances to pass on the BPA - but in this case I agree with you on taking Schaefer if they have the chance.

Besides - inserting Schaefer into that lineup makes trading Vlasic a lot less controversial.

No you just have an amazing defensive group.

That would be a dream scenario but also highly unlikely. It would be fun though.

If the Hawks draft Schaefer the lineup could be:

Schaefer-Rinzel
Vlasic-Levshunov
Korchinski-Allan

All home-grown and all 1st rounders with the exception of Vlasic who was 2nd round.

And with home-grown del Mastro and Kaiser in reserve.

vlasic really shouldnt be available at all

if he was it would need to be a young good nhler or a top tier prospect

maybe something around rossi?
shane wright + something?
pieces from utah

in theory they really shouldnt be trading him at all but blackhawks do need help offensively

Teams don't build their bluelines around Alex Vlasics.

Jake Muzzin, Brian Dumoulin, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Dennis Seidenberg, Erik Cernak.

These are players that are on championship teams, but aren't core.

Hjalmarson very much was a core piece here in Chicago

The big 3 on blueline in Chicago was Keith, Seabrook and Hjalmarsson. All 3 were backbone of cup winning teams

Kane, Toews, Hossa and Sharp were core pieces up front

All 7 were only guys who were on all 3 cup teams

A guy like Corey Crawford after establishing himself in NHL became core piece (And key cog of two cups)
