Plekanec is not a top 6 center
DD in not an NHL player
Emilin is a #5 at best

Easy to replace i guess (only Markov would be a loss but he will decline soon anways)
Plekanec is still pretty clearly the center you rely on the most in tough situations. Most teams obviously run a top 9 now, but I don't see the minutes Plekanec eats for you being easily replaced. And the defender I was referring to was Markov (or you keep him and pay him something like 3m to 4m but that cuts into your re-signing space).

But whatever, I'm not going to argue this first. We'll see how it plays out when either Radulov signed or leaves on July 1st.

Do you have problems reading? I perfectly accounted for those deals except Emelin. You will have to replace 2 defenders (Markov and Emelin) and a top 6 center (Plekanec), with an aging core. You could find the space to sign all of them long-term, but you will have serious depth issues and will be screwed when you have to pay players coming off ELC's if they are successful.

And you're accounting the cap not raising and overrating the salaries. Beaulieu as of now will take a 2M raise at best. Given comparables, Galchenyuk will sign around 6.5-7 so around a 4M raise. Price ask for let's say a 2.5M raise to 9M.

Let's say in 2018-2019

Pacioretty 4.5M- Galchenyuk 7M - Radulov 7M
Lehkonen 1.5M - XXX 5M - Gallagher 3.75M
Carr/Hudon/Ghetto 1.2M - Danault 2 M - Shaw 3.9M
Byron 1.167M - Mitchell 1.3M - Flynn/McCarron/whatever 1M
Whatever 0.9M/Whatever 0.9M

XXX 5M - Weber 7.857M
Beaulieu 3M - Petry 5.5M
XXXX 1 M - Pateryn 1M
XXXX 0.8M

Price 9M
XXX 1M

Total: 75.3 around-ish

There we go, we almost fit under even this year cap. We'll be just fine.

Weber and Price most certainly are.
Weber is not a top 5 player in the NHL, and hasn't been for a few years (if he ever was). The luster to his great start to this year statistically will fade as soon as your powerplay stops scoring at an unsustainable rate (around 25% oiSH%).

But Malkin still is a top 5 player in the NHL, right?

How do you pay for the in between year with Plekanac and Emelin still on the books? Its also unlikely the cap raises significantly this year or next. Have you see the Canadian dollar and local attendence?

But whatever, believe what you want. We will see who's correct on July 1st or sooner.

He is close with the russians on the habs.

Anything could happen, but he'll likely re sign. Especially if we can make a solid run this year.

He missed his big pay day by like 2 years. Going on 31 for next season he has to be realistic. 6.5 for 5-6 years IMO

Yes that is true in on some degree, but some players want to stay where they are.

Petry loved his time in montreal after he was traded, and the only team he wanted to play for was Montreal. Detroit was going to give him more money but he didnt want to hit the open market.

You Montreal fans love to revise history don't you. Detroit had the chance to pickup Petry at the trade deadline from Edmonton and they turned it down. They were not going to offer Petry a contract despite Petry wanting to play in Detroit.

As for Radulov Detroit offered him less but Radulov wanted a 2 year deal which they werent confortable signing him too so they walked away.

The in between year being next year? Well DD and Markov's contracts ($9.25M) are off the books, as well as some other small contracts and past buyouts. The money is there for the Habs. I analogized this as well and agree with the post you were replying to.

Agreed. Cap capacity is not a major problem moving forward for the Habs.

If Carey Price is the best player in the NHL according to most Habs fans shouldn't he be paid the most when he signs his next contract? I think its also a little tough to get a true quality number 2 centre in free agency at 5 M. Lastly, if Petry is making 5.5 you want to find a number 1 LHD for 5M or do you just slot in someone like Emelin?

If Radu wants to stay in Montreal and doesn't command too much money, then it's all good for the Habs

On a fun note, Petry almost bought my sister's house last year (it was near Carey Price's). IIRC he visited the house before he signed the extension, so he was pretty sure he was going to stay. Finally they sold it to someone else and they are a building a new one near Shea Weber's place. I'll probably propose him to throw me a few slapshots if I ever meet him (I'm a goalie). Should I be nervous?

Petry? Nah.
Weber? Make sure all your affairs are in order...

According to most Habs fans? I think it's according to the hockey world. It's the media and other fans that are the ones saying "the Habs are nothing without Price". Yes, some Habs fans are disgruntled and probably always will be till the next Cup but truth is all teams have fans like this. Some teams more than the other due to popularity ;)

Price to me is getting $9-10M range for 8 years. All depends on Price and how much he wants to take and also leave room for the Habs to acquire other players.
