Hard to complain about this year in context. He's on a 21G/26A (47P) 82 game pace and has been on an island and playing out of position at C most of the year. That includes those 10 games early in the year where the line with Slafkovsky and Anderson was completely unproductive as well.

He's not a C but he's not paid to be and won't have to be as long as one of Dach or Dvorak can stay reasonably healthy. It will be a lot of fun to see him with one of Dach/Suzuki to start next season.
It's evident to me this acquisition brings very decent value.
Middle six can play center and is working on details to make himself even more versatile.
No one is mentioning the awesome job he's been doing on the dot as a lefty.
I never expected that progression and I certainly never expected him to be taking draws on PP1.
He's also not horrible defensively so you can use him for situational hockey late in games.
This is a player still working on his game; the more Swiss army knives we can fill our roster with the better.

I feel like we have too much legit talent in the org along with strong assets (picks, tradable prospects, etc.) that going after a project-like player with question marks like Zegras isn't really necessary.

Definitely thinking about moving our pick though for someone plug in play though
Any top six plug-in I'd want would cost quite a bit otherwise we are simply better off evaluating what we have.
Some members are convinced we are a playoff contender by acquiring a Zegras for example.
He's actually the antithesis of the type of player we need to solidify our top six.

He put up those points with some help and being force-fed minutes, PP time etc.

Beware of the next Drouin
Terry helped but they didn't have much else. Of course those 2 got big minutes. They were the only 2 decent players. Drouin take is bad. Zegras may not be a winner but he will likely put up 80 pts on a decent team. Drouin may have had that potential but he never reached it and he needs to play with one of the best players in the league to put up 50 pts.

Some scout told Sather during the negotiations "see if they will throw in McDonagh". All Sather wanted to do was get rid of Gomez's contract so he could sign Gaborik. All Gainey had to do was say no. Sather needed cap room and was moving Gomez with or without McDonagh. Not Gainey's finest hour.
The “negotiations” happened when Sather saw Gainey at a HOF dinner and walked over to ask if he would be interested in Gomez…

Gainey & Gauthier went to watch ONE U of Wisconsin game, which was McDonaghs worst of the season and decision was made - Pat Hickey at the time wrote an entire article on how the deal transpired for The Gazette

That same article detailed how in early 2006 Gainey told Gauthier he wanted a RDman with 1st rounder in the draft, because there was nothing in the pipeline and Gauthier started shadowing David Fisher at high school hockey games in Minny

Hockeydb scouting and tik tok highlights.

It's a massive concern his production massively dipped the minute they had better young forwards to give ice to
He hasn't played enough this season to know that. Even if Karlsson and McTavish got better linemates that may because the Ducks coach is clueless.

Very well said. I've been very pleasantly surprised with how much better his game has gotten since coming back from injury. He doesn't look as misplaced at C as he did earlier (though i'd still rather see him on the wing).

I really liked Higgins. He seemed to always come out with the puck in board battles.

Side note... Man was that 2002 draft class mediocre.
Higgins was good. Ferland and Korneyev had some potential.

Ferland was great in the AHL, maybe too slow for the NHL. Great playoff guy, though, he would go into the boards with anyone and just muscle with them. First game he'd come out with the puck half the time. The next couple of times it would be more than half. By the end of the series he'd still be diving into board battles and extending them as long as possible while opponents would just let him come out with the puck instead of going in for yet another struggle.

We'll see if Newhook outdoes both Gulayev and Gauthier. Odds are good so far.

Pretty cool how well he and Armia have gelled together. This kid's ceiling keeps creeping upwards as he gets more and more comfortable. People that were on the fence on him have hopefully hopped off by now and are pulling up a chair so they can watch and enjoy.

He's improving almost every game. He's not just using his straight ahead speed or his shot off the rush, he's creating offense in many different ways. He's playing a lot smarter than he was in Colorado. Really like this player.
I agree, he’s using his quickness to get into open spaces and create offense, I’ve been impressed too

I think he's a great competitor and he has a real talent for stickhandling and pivoting in the slot to get shots off. Caufield might want to take notes lol

Yeah this guy is a top 6er in the future for sure. He's got speed to burn and he's really starting to use it to manipulate opposing teams defenses and take advantage of that space in different ways.

Love a smart fast player with a great shot, he's already good but I think he's gonna be better than we even expect.

A lot of negativity on Newhook…we didn’t pay for a 70 points center. We payed for exactly what he is for us this season, a 50 points secondary scoring option.

I think he’s a good complimentary option but you don’t win with too many forwards like him.

there's minimal negativity on Newhook - i haven't seen anything but positive comments. maybe if you're spending your time on Facebook.

also is anyone saying we should bring in 3 more guys like him?

perplexing post.
