Player Discussion Alex Newhook (Part 2) : Book an Appointment with New Look Edition

G were also much worse technically as were Dman mobility- can’t compare eras like that.

What would McDavid with his speed & skill done during Gretzky era?
Would probably been killed by Scott Stevens, Darius Kasparaitis or Chris Pringer hits like Kariya.

They weren’t around in the Gretzky heyday of early - mid 80s (Stevens had just started)
Pick other names then, I was too young to remember players from those days. Hockey was violent back then, until the end of the 90s.

The game was more wide open but skating was atrocious which is why Gretzky had such an advantage despite not being fast to obviously go along w elite hockey IQ

Additionally McDavid would’ve had security detail like cement head for 99, so no one would touch him

Lafleur was the only star of the 70s & 80s era who didn’t have any protection and was abused terribly yet performed impeccably

Still think he's developing into a really good two way player.

He needs on his end product decision making as well as his faceoffs. I think he's improving defensively every game because his effort levels have been off the charts. If he can do that, he's a completely solid middle 6 player. There's a ton of untapped offensive potential in him, but it just depends if he can ever learn to slow things down at the right times.

Newhook is flying out there, generating tons of scoring chances and playing a great defensive game.

I mean, it's just tragic at this point that you people can't see it.

“Hatred and fear blind us. We no longer see each other. We see only the faces of monsters, and that gives us the courage to destroy each other.”

There is nothing to show for it.

You can't play a full season of top-6 minutes and barely reach 10 assists.

He is so f***ing dogshit.

We can all see that he skates fast and it leads to absolutely no points on the scoreboard.

He should be a 4th liner with PK minutes.

The biggest problem I've seen with Newhook is that he plays so fast that when he gets into the zone, he doesn't know what to do with it. He's not strong enough to win most board battles he creates, he's been playing with Laine, so he has limited outlets.

On the PP Newhook gains the zone a lot easier because he uses his speed to break in and then drops it off. But at ES, he doesn't have the players with him to dish off too.

This and his shooting efficacy... Looks to be either rushing or fumbling his shot execution frequently. Rather than symptomatic of "bad hands", his stick handling and puck control execution outside of the shooting moment is both consistent and highly skilled.

Looks very much like a player trying a bit too hard to score... That's a very fixable issue, especially for a player with a very solid history of goal scoring both in the NCAA and NHL relative to his draft class (8th in goals from '19 class).

Pavel Bure was special. What a beauty! One of my favorite players then

Bure did bow out due to injuries, but he had an underrated mean streak. Sure, you could try to hit him and then answer to gino odjick, but Bure himself could come back at you too with a massive flying elbow too.

Am I the only one that absolutely hated Habs with all fires of hell when I first came on HFboards, and he’s now a favorite poster? I can’t be the only one.

I don't know if he's changed over time or I just misunderstood him in the earlier years but, he's grown on me too, lol.

If there's one thing to excuse his lack of production it's that one.

When you play with Laine you sure as f*** aren't getting any help whatsoever, Laine is mostly waiting for others to do the work and feed him opportunities.

Dach also played like dogshit the entire time he played this season...so Newhook has been stapled to these 2 bad (for him) linemates and some other rotating guy for the entire season.

It's hard to judge him objectively in those conditions.

I like his speed and effort but if he had to shoot at a soccer goal, he'd probably hit the post.

Give Newhook his top 6 ice time and pp minutes to another more talented player and you will see the difference in productivity. The problem is that Montreal doesn't have someone else to steal his ice time yet.

It's like in the NBA... If a player is playing 35 mins, averages 18 points, with 40 attempted shots per game, he will be relegated to being a bench player pretty quick after a few games.

As soon as Demidov, a new top 6 center, a new top 9 UFA and maybe Kapanen emerges, Newhook will be relegated to the 3rd and hopefully 4th line as soon as next year.

Mesar can play top 6 and be productive.

He's got the speed of Paul Byron and the inability to hit the net like the Habs version of Lehks.

Newhook is the type of guy that if we trade - he will become an integral part of a Stanley Cup winner.

Keep him around. At his cap hit he has value. Same goes for Dach. Give him a chance to be healthy. Perfect third line guys for me.

Alex Newhook on Ivan Demidov: ''I had an idea maybe i'd be playng with him. But i didn't know until this morning... It's exciting! Another guy with a lot of skill and a guy that can make plays. So i'm excited. A guy that plays with pace, too. I think we can be a pretty dangerous combo and just looking forward to enjoying it tonight.''

Wow, a real answer from a professional hockey player.

I can’t even put into words how much rage and hate I have for this idiot. Demidov set him up for two slam dunk goals in game. He had Demidov for easy breakaway in OT and fumbled that. Could have just iced it and Demi would have beat everyone there.
He’s a brain dead player. Can not wait until he’s gone from this organization.
