Hahaha I hear ya..... I got banned from official Canadiens board for making fun of kostopolous too much... Everyone said he was better then Tender??

Edit - tender led the time in goals per time on ice for a few seasons too I thinks
Some people never understood that the official Canadiens' board belongs to the Habs and it's not permitted to attack the players or staff. Different than on an independent board.

Don't bet your house there. The Swedes played a nasty game against the Russians today. Completely made them their ***** in the 1st.

I believe it, but the Russians were not their usually dominating self this tournament. One of the few offensively challanged Russian squads I've seen.

I won't put my house on it, but maybe a coffee.

Look. You can't always go underplaying a team's good performance by stating "the opposition played crap".

It is possible the Swedes were just that damn good today.

True. Reminds me of a quote by Ted Nolan:

"Sometimes, we look at what we did wrong too much and not look at what the other team did right."

I didn't downplay anything. But when was the last time that Switzerland scored more goals than Russia in a WJHC?

Well, latendresse was sent back after his first camp where he played really well. I don't think keeping him around the 2nd year was a mistake. The problem came from management not being patient enough. He should have been paired up with Koivu and stayed there, they were working well together.
He proved he was ready when we traded him. We just misused him completely.

As for Gally, I agree, sending him down won't hurt him at all. That being said, it doesn't mean it would help him more than staying with the big club. I think it will come down to whether or not management finds it worthy of wasting an ELC year in a transitional year (half a season) where we're likely not to make the post season anyways.
Might as well send him down, let him go back to his dominating form, see how strong he can perform in the POs, give him another summer to work hard, and see how great he comes in next year.

It should be more easy to do the playoff next season, they want to pass from 16 to 20 teams in the playoff!!!

So you think going back to the OHL for 25 games will help him 'dominate games on his own' once he reaches the NHL?

Seems kind of an odd conclusion to reach...

the OHL is the OHL...the NHL is the NHL

Dominating in one league, doesn't guarantee domination in the other (see Corey Locke, or a million other players who've dominated the CHL).

Very few NHL players 'dominate a game on their own' on a consistent basis, so if this is the expectation for Galchenyuk, then I think we need a reality check. Again, i'd like someone to explain what the benefit is for Galchenyuk to dominate the OHL?

Once more, he's been dominating that league since he's been 16yrs old...what will 3 more months do?

+1

Well said. Well said...

I miss that forum, JHaul made it what it was with his constant humor and Ali G game threads. If I remember correctly he got sentenced to a deuce at the Mimico Correctional Centre for illegal streaming of NHL games. What a blast from the past. Thanks for the reminder man. haha.

Great post!

Only way Galchenyuk should go back to junior, is if he looks out of place at camp.

IMO Galchenyuk isn't fully back in physical form. He needs a lot more game time before he'll be ready to shine with the Habs. However, I'm not concerned about his future. I'll be patient.

He should go back to junior because it would be stupid to burn a full year of his ELC for half a season of play as an 18 year old instead of a full season as a 21-22 year old.

Interesting, because I find it stupid to hold a player back from the level of competition he belongs to due to something as trivial as "burning a year off his ELC". What's the difference really? You'll just be delaying his adjustment to the NHL at that point. Half a season + playoffs(if) is more than enough for him to adjust to the league and possibly excel. Year 2 he progresses and probably excels, year 3 he is ready to breakout and plausibly dominate. I'd rather him be a beast already at 21, than to be a year behind just so we can save a million or 2 on the cap for a year..

As early as next season, with a couple smart moves, the Habs could possibly make a run. Would you rather "experienced Galchenyuk" that could contribute to that run, or "adjusting Gally" who would do just fine I'm sure, but obviously wouldn't be as comfortable as the hardened version?

And how much is a million or two on the salary cap worth relative to the rate at which Galchenyuk develops in the NHL?

What's 3 months in the NHL on a likely bad team going to do? Sending him to the OHL saves his entry level contract from being wasted on a write off 48 game season.

As much as I can't wait to see Gally in a Habs uniform here are some caveats to consider. Including Sarnia and Team USA he has already played 40 games. If he makes it on the Habs that's another 48 games + playoffs (I'm thinking playoffs because if this is not what management projects then it would be pointless to burn a year off his ELC). If we make it past the first round that's over a hundred games played. That might be too much for an 18 year old coming off serious knee surgery. Perhaps it's wiser to let him finish in Sarnia (assuming his hockey season ends in mid April) and that will give him 5 months to get stronger for training camp next fall. Given he's so close to being NHL ready I think what's most important right now for Galch's development is what he does off the ice. I'm afraid if he makes the Habs this year he will burn out when we need him most. I could be wrong, but it's something to consider.

Lately I've been all for Galchenyuk to play with the Habs. This, IMO, is the best argument not to that I've read. Especially the idea of him getting a long off season to train. That's crucial IMO.

I still think if he can hack it he stays but in light of your argument it's probably not the best choice.

Great post.

Gally has all the tools offensively but still alot to learn defensively before the habs bring him over,he looks lost without the puck half the time.Let him finish the year in Sarnia and bring him over next year

Oh yes, don't get me wrong, I'm still praying that he makes it, cognizant that this is my emotion talking over reason. If he does make it I hope he plays with Plekanec and Gionta.

He's probably not going to be any better without the puck when he reports to training camp next September, it certainly doesn't seem to be Beaulieau's strong suit when it comes to coaching. There's probably not much more he's going to learn in Hamilton in the 2nd half this year but the reps of continuing to play big minutes after the year off is still important.

I'm not as stressed out about the year of service for 48 games as some here, I think with a prospect at this level you make the best decision for his development and put financial considers way on the back burner, it could wind up as some kind of tie breaker but I have other concerns as it is.

If we do have a season we're looking at a very limited training camp for the whole team, never mind an 18 year old, to adapt to a new coach + system. Probably not a situation conducive to working him in and we're likely to see a reasonably compacted schedule on top of that. It just doesn't seem overly practical at this point. I do think he's good enough for the NHL level FWIW.

After all? That would imply they were actually good in the past games and we were too blind to see it. That's not what happened, they were all terrible except Gally and Trouba offensively until last game against teams that mattered.

Yes, for the reasons mentioned above.

If that surge of dominance didn't happen and Gally kept getting the shaft Housely looks like a total moron. But now instead he is a genius.

Well i've seen stupid coachs get the "better" of some players because of good results. Doesn't mean they were right.

I think we will have to agree to disagree on many points.......

this question is for That or anyone else who's seen Galch in the OHL this year as well as the WJCs.

How different is the Galchenyuk of Sarnia and the one on team USA?

I've been impressed with what I've seen but not necessarily blown away. Is he that much better with Sarnia?

If you think running into a hot goalie is playing bad, I don't know what to say. In previous games they looked every bit as good as Team Canada, including the matchup vs them.

I'm not sure how a 2-1 win played into the minds of fans and made them conclude we were a supremely superior squad, especially since their play was equal to or better than our own in that game.

Anyone could see this coming from a mile away.
