Alex Formenton: The person versus the player?

While another prospect, drafted just a year later, who was charged and and convicted of sexual misconduct is back actively participating at an NHL camp in Montreal and is being touted as a future "core" piece of their organization.

Things aren't the same as they were in 2000... sometimes. It depends on who you are, how good you are, who's writing about you, what team you play for, how many retweets posts about you are getting, etc.
Mailloux is still not eligible for NHL games and what he did is hardly comparable to what's been alleged.

You're right, Mailloux will still need to meet with Gary Bettman before playing in an NHL game. But he's certainly not "suspended". And the media is already reframing his reputation: What's next for London Knights blue-line star Logan Mailloux?

Also, no need to minimize what he did. It was a sexual crime, and he was rightfully charged and convicted.

I am not minimizing it at all; what he did versus what allegedly occurred is a completely different class of crime.

Funny enough, I think most people would argue you are the one minimizing things by comparing the sharing of a defamatory and sexually explicit photo without the consent a sex partner to what is being alleged as a coordinated gang rape.

I'm not making any judgements on what did or didn't occur in that hotel room. If I were to state my opinion, I would absolutely lean towards saying that what's alleged to have occured actually did occur. It's far more likely that an accuser is telling the truth vs lying.

With that said, I don't know with certainty what happened nor have I heard any of the interviews or read any of the texts. But I trust that the LPD will make the right decision on whether or not to prosecute. There are so many eyeballs on this that I would imagine they are exploring every possible avenue they can. While he initial investigation may have been lacking, this one certainly isn't.

If the police establish that a crime was committed, the players should absolutely be suspended pending the trial. And if they are convicted, playing in the NHL again will not even be a question. But if police cannot establish that a crime was committed, I don't think the players should be suspended.

Does that mean there's a chance that the players do not get punished for a heinous act? Yes, and I acknowledge that.

This really isn't what was being discussed at all, nor the initial argument you made... at all.

No offence, but I don't think you're being straight-up so I don't care to continue with this.

I was/am a Formenton fan...Really liked him as a prospect and in his brief NHL career to date.
I do not know him personally. He came from pretty humble roots and seemed like a good kid based soley on interviews.

I have been a hold out ,..in accepting he is guilty or assuming he is guilty. I have been told he is many times.
I maintain... wait for the results of the investigation.. to see what his role in all of this was and if there is sufficient reason in that role for criminal charges.

Still have my fingers crossed for him.

Same, he is/was a unique weapon in the bottom six and particularly on the PK where he would scare the bejeezus out of opposing defencemen, force them to rush plays, and occasionally generate a breakaway or two for himself.

The team as Dorion envisaged it needed Formenton in the bottom six.

I'm sad it's likely we'll never see it.

they should have put more emphasis on drafting for character

Are you going to hire PIs to look into the pasts of your draftees?

All the potential draftees?

You think this is something that came out in the interviews? Player X isn't the only guy that was there with an NHL contract.

Dan Synder's parent's also forgave Heatley in court so from a PR angle that helped Heatley's cause.

As far as Formentan goes, I agree with everyone else on the thread that pointed out that we don't know all the facts. Until we do we can't figure out what to do next. I am curious if having not played in the NHL last year counts as having served a suspension.
