He had those four early years that were at like a 40 point pace... would have been a longer peak but the 2012-2013 saw him play only half the year... but even years after that he was good for 30 plus points, he made good reads 5on5 and brought physicality.

Edler was a better player in some of those 30 point seasons than he was in those 40 point ones, IMO. I'd consider that his peak. I was shocked that he became so air-tight defensively.

Just think this is a slam dunk ring of honour player given the other D who are up in there. But the fact that half his career was played throughout the Jim Benning era + Torts year clouds the judgement.

Yeah, it's still weird to me that people consider 2012 Edler when he was iffy defensively but picked up lots of Sedin-influenced PP points to be his 'prime' rather than the post-injury Edler who became a very, very solid defensive player. Unfortunately those years were wasted because Benning.

Edler rebounding from what you accurately defined as a guy who could clear waivers to start 2014-15 to doing a complete turnaround as a #1 defenseman when he found chemistry with Tanev was crazy

my memory is foggy but i'm sure you'll remember this - was it just Tanev that made him go from sulky prime-depression Naslund vibes to stepping up as a real team leader and being the best player on the team in the late/early post Sedin years? he hated Torts, didn't thrive in the first year under Willie (the Sbieksa year), but took off after that... ?

He turned it around immediately in 14-15 after bottoming out horrifically under Tortorella.

Me being camera shy, but I bumped into him one time when we were both in line for the same restaurant. He had a walking boot, but I can't recall what was the specific injury. It was in 2016. Nice of him to take several pics with me and my friends.

Nice to hear this. Edler was such a horse for almost 1000 games

Started a little bit of a gentle giant offensive guy that could be mistake prone and then became more physical especially come playoff time. Just about knocked a young Drew Doughty into the next orbit in a heated series with LA. Really rounded out his defensive game by his late 20's and early 30's.

Integral part of the dominant Sedin led squad forever a Canuck. Will look good in the ring of honour

ROH = just a single tier below that who also played the majority of his career/prime with the team

But the Canucks have a lower bar for both so it's going to be interesting to see how crowded the ROH gets and how many jerseys of non-HOF players get retired.

Ohlund was the best dman this team ever had. Miles better than Edler imo.

Guy was a horse and so smooth and calm and smart and could be physically imposing. He was undoubtedly a number 1 D and was so underrated in the NHL at the time.

Salo was close if he could have stayed healthy. Never trusted two dmen as much I trusted those 2.
