The fact that Barkov already has both a Selke and a 96 point season, when Getzlaf didn't achieve either of these tells me all that I'd need to pick the big Finnish forward.

I think recency bias is going to cloud this a bit but I’d still go Barkov for better player. Getz was good defensively himself and was a better playmaker but Barkov is a better goal scorer and better defensively. Offensively it’s close but Barkov’s defensive edge wins out. Getzlaf’s career length and playoff record might have him ahead for career currently though. He also had better points and point per game finishes. I think people forget that Getzlaf was one of the best playoff producers for a good period. From ‘07 to ‘17 he was 5th in playoff points and 2nd in playoff points per game to Crosby. He was also runner up to the Hart and Art Ross in 13-14.

I think it's really close but either way unless Barkov falls off a cliff he is only 29 and will end up having the better career.

Pretty good and even poll if one stop to think about it.

Barkov has hardware that Getz was nowhere close to getting.

The 2010s weren't really that long ago and people are already comparing the raw stats of that era to the current one.

There was quite a few unappreciated centers in the shadow of Malkin, Crosby, Toews, Bergeron and even Stamkos. But Getzlaf might be at the top of that list...

he was injured in some of his best seasons. But 5 seasons finishing top 10 in PPG is really damn good. Im pretty sure that's only bested by Crosby, Malkin and Thornton for centers from 2005-2015.

Barkov had 96 points in 18-19, which was in the 10s... Or what do you mean?

The poster I quoted compared Barkov's 96 point season to Getzlaf's lower career high, despite both happening in vastly different scoring environments.

I guess I should have specified the early to mid 2010s. Scoring started going up in the late 2010s.

Barkov's the better player but Getz had the better career I'd say.

Player is individual but career also encompasses the team that surrounded him for those years. Both are team captains & all the leadership that comes with it should be factored in. Barkov has been captain for six years so far while Getz was for twelve. Edge to Getz there.

If Florida/Barkov earn another Cup and/or he remains captain for another 5-6 years then I'd give the career edge to Barkov but for now it's Getz's.

Very close though, a good poll that makes you think.

The DPE 2.0 was roughly from 11-12 to 16-17. Scoring started changing heavily by 18-19 when they changed goalie equipment rules. Barkov was 10th in league scoring and 13th in points per game. Getzlaf was 2nd in points and 3rd in points per game in 13-14. Even if we agree the high end forwards were better in 18-19, that’s a pretty big discrepancy. And even adjusted, puts both numbers at 96, but with Getzlaf doing it in 5 fewer games.

I agree, and I assume Barkov will have a similar career trajectory to someone like Kopitar, though you never know when the bottom could fall out. Getzlaf’s best year was at 28, but he fell off heavily at 33 despite being the big body passing center you’d think would age well. And like Getzlaf, Barkov had dealt with a bunch of injuries over the years.
