Post-Game Talk: [AHL Playoffs Round 3 Game 3] Abby def. Eagles | 3-2 (OT) (Mancini, Sasson, Karlsson) | One Step Closer

What a bunch of partisan 'homers' in the rink in Loveland. Silovs wasn't even picked as a star.

Karlsson was the first star, and two Eagles--Wise and Ludvig were #2 and #3. Actually laughable. It was like they were so ticked off at the Canucks goaltender for stealing another one, that they refused to name him one of the three stars.

Almost enough to make you relish the possibility of the Canucks driving a stake through the heart of this team in Game #4.

Silovs let in a softy to open the game but was a wall thereafter.

Mancini, Brisebois and Wolanin had solid games. McWard was so-so. Woo and Hirose really struggled. Kudryavtsev was on the ice in the final minute of the previous game so I very much doubt that his scratch was injury-related.

Karlsson played well; nice for him to get the game winner. Sasson was good. Lekkerimaki is getting back to form. Team misses Raty's offensive ability.

The trust Malhotra is showing in a young center like Mueller is pretty mind-blowing. He was out there for a big draw with 40 seconds left and won it cleanly.

Win or lose the rest of the way, you can't write any better a script for the likes of Lekkerimaki, Mueller and Kudryavtsev. Their games will grow by leaps and bounds from this experience.

And Mancini was the best d-man on the ice for either team. He's really going to have to somehow do a full face-plant in training camp, not to make the parent Canucks next season.

Full props to the Canucks pro scouts. It looks at this point like they 'stole' Mancini from the Rangers.

Mancini, Lekkermaki, and Karlsson will be in the NHL next season.
And you can add Raty, Sasson and maybe even Silovs to that list, if the Canucks trade a goalie this off-season.

But that's the whole purpose of having a successful AHL team. You have young players pushing from below--until they eventually represent a cheaper and more viable option than making a trade or bringing in a more expensive UFA.

For years in Chicago and Utica, the Canucks had mostly AHL players with zero NHL potential, other than a couple of their goalies. And their draft picks mostly stagnated and drifted out of the system.

A big part of the improved picture is just better drafting. You look at this Abbotsford Canuck lineup, and it's sprinkled with players drafted well after the opening two rounds. And they've got kids like Mynio and Arliksson practicing and likely playing next season.

I know it's easy to get down on the current Canucks NHL management. But things really are light-years better than they used to be.

Meanwhile, Chatfield, Gadjovich, Podkolzin, and Forsling are all playing in the final 4 right now.
I guess the moral of this story is that they had to leave Vancouver to finally reach whatever potential they've reached.

If they'd stayed in Vancouver, they'd probably be out of pro hockey by now.

19. Jake Wise / C / 5’10 195 / 01-02-00 (USNTDP)
Speed-driven, cerebral and crafty centre who has thrived in a 2C role with the USNTDP this season. Battled injury to begin the year, but produced top-level numbers once he returned. Was overshadowed by the likes of Hughes, Wahlstrom, and Farabee but was a solid addition to the top PP unit or as the lynchpin on PP2. Has a future as a top-six centre. Off to BU in the fall.

I will never forget the hype that was created that year for Jake Wise by one man. Cam Robinson. When available in the 3rd round still, the Canucks selected Tyler Madden and the insanity thanks to Chicago picking Jake Wise with the next selection because Mr. Robinson was so in love with Jake Wise that year. 2018 was kind of a shit draft and Bob's team of scouts had him in the 50s.

What a play by Karlsson on that winner. He’s gotten so good at playing in traffic and going to the blue paint.

Great stuff, now take the next one and the series!
there was a really good article last summer about this:

I think we will see Mancini in a top 4 role midway next season, he's on an absolute insane trajectory and is Abbotsford's #1 defenceman.

No kidding. It'll be really interesting to see what the composition of Vancouver's blueline looks like this fall. D-Petey and Mancini both look ready and ready now, and we have Willander entering the fray as well.
