Podcast (Audio) After the Whistle

f***! :thumbd:

I hope this is untrue. Ray had developed into the only enjoyable part of the Sabres broadcast. (which is honestly saying quite a damned bit about the quality of said broadcasts)
I heard this last week too, from somewhere else. I think it was the Instigator podcast? Considering the number of people who have been talking about it, and lack of denial, I'm guessing it's true.

This team really needs to move...every single thing that isn't complete dogshit ends up leaving and replaced by more dog shit.

Terry needs to sell and get out.

Oh f*** me... this is why they kept Matt Ellis around, isn't it?

They mentioned today that Rob Ray was retiring.

Good for Ray. Hope he has a happy long retirement.

They need to re-do the entire sabres broadcast (at least IMHO). Far too homer-ish. The games I do watch I'm often watching the opposition feed unless its Boston. I'm glad they aren't doing the live broadcast from Buffalo anymore when they are on the road though.

I may well be in the minority, but I like Dan Duleavy on PBP. I'm not neccessarily old school; just old.

He calls the game the way I think it should be called. No screetching and uneccessary hyperbole. Not usually attempting to use abnoxious modern hockey lexicon; which I think sucks.

He is audible and clear.

I do agree that he needs a color man who is entertaining, given.

He's not Ted darling or Rick Jeanneret, but then who is?

I can't think of anyone around the league I'd prefer, to be honest.

I imagine not having RJ around made it a little less fun for Rob….not to mention it must be eating him alive to see what is happening with the Buffalo Sabres.

I love Rob Ray. I just found him entertaining which is what it’s all about. He has been a “ray” of sunshine through these shitty years. He and RJ.

For me its less about his enthusiasm and more about him doing a poor job describing play. Listening on the radio with his PBP can be tough.

This exactly

I really don't care about any PBP or color guys in the league, hell last night I listened to the Amerks game with the Laval feed in French because I thought it sounded cool... But if I ever have the Sabres game on in background while cooking in the kitchen, working, or doing any sort of multitasking, I have no idea what is happening in the game.

If I can close my eyes and tell what end of the rink the puck is in and who has possession, the guy gets a passing grade. And DD is terrible at this.

I think he is the worst announcer of any sport particularly in light of the fact he is the radio voice as well. He never fills in the blanks i.e. Who has the puck, where, which way is it going. He constantly gets the players wrong and he babbles and then yells scores. Who scored? Which team? I rather watch my score alert on my phone when I can't watch the game.

I really wish that the Sabres had separate TV and radio broadcasts as the styles are so different.

Having been the radio voice for the Sabres for 20 or so years, Rick Jeanneret brought many of the characteristics of a radio broadcast to TV when they combined the broadcasts. But as time went by, even RJ's style changed. That having been said, during his final few games, I made sure that I listened to a game on the radio while working in my garage - just to experience RJ's radio broadcast one last time. Over the years, as a kid, then a college student, then someone who couldn't afford cable, then as a single parent with something always going on - I'll bet that I've caught the majority of Sabres game I've experienced on the radio since I became a fan in 1970.

As for Dunleavy, he's fine for TV and I like him for the reasons cited a few posts up. But as for the radio, he's horrible at describing for radio what he knows everyone can see on their TV.

I was curious how many teams had separate TV and radio broadcasts so I checked google. If I read the table on Wikipedia correctly, and assuming it's correct, Buffalo is one of only three teams to simulcast TV and radio. What a surprise.....

For you guys complaining about DD, he tells you at least once a game our goalie is at the lonely end of the rink. Figure it out. Don't blame him for the radio pbp. He's not doing that while broadcasting the game on tv.

We could be best friends

If you had under ten minutes* into their short show on hiring Jarmo for how long it would take for them to get to hoping this means they’ll be bringing in Ryan Reaves you win.

*excluding the over three minutes of ads to start the show

Every time I try to give them another chance…they just show they’re stuck in the same strange Ryan Reaves/Matt Rempe shaped place. Guys who are getting put in the minors and barely play…and are terrible when they do are their only answers for turning things around.

It’s almost amazing they aren’t the GM yet

That's mostly Peters.

I gave them another try recently and Rivet was trashing Peters for never being prepared for the show. Which is right on. It is interesting to listen to a hockey podcast and the host hates the NHL, hates watching hockey games, hates following prospects or the NHL draft.

He did go to an Amerks playoff game but had little to say about Sabres prospects. But Luke Tuch was the best player on the ice, of course.

For a couple of avid knuckle draggers, you’d think they would do a little research on who is the toughest player in the American hockey league or down in the coast. Then start advocating for that guy instead of a couple of NHL has been who are clear detriment to their team. They didn’t know who Olivier was when he came over to Columbus from Nashville. I don’t think they even knew who AJ Greer was and he played in the state for years before moving up to Boston and Calgary and now Florida. (That’s not to say that Greer is some great physical presence, but he’s at least game to throw hands when it’s required.)

Do some f***ing work.

I wasn’t going to do it but they were the only podcast to put up a new episode after the hire and I thought…this will be fine. It’s a short piece specifically on the hiring. How could it possibly go off the rails into the same eye rolling suggestions that made me give up in the first place.

And yeah…it’s Peters. He’s got to be the worst person I’ve ever heard talk about something I care about. And not because he’s negative…I’M NEGATIVE because there’s no other reaction to have to the last many years. I LIKE hearing people be hard on them and call out their vast issues. It’s what I want to hear from every outlet until things change. But, somehow, Peters is even bad at doing that. Rivet isn’t a strong enough personality to drive Peters anywhere in conversation but at least he seems to try to reason things out in the moment.

I’ve been saying since they were on the radio they need a professional voice leading discussion. Since they moved to the podcast they also need that person to tell them when they’re being too repetitively stupid as well.

The only thing I can get out of the show at this point is a definitive understanding of why former teammates like Peters so much. It isn’t because he’d go out there and lose fights for them every so often. It’s because he’s a clown they could laugh at too stupid to know he was the joke.
