Podcast (Audio) After the Whistle

Huh?

Darcy's team literally nearly won the cup, with the moves that Darcy made in 1999. Also, had an outstanding 2001 team that was a successive series of freak incidents (puck falling from the sky, smehlik whiffing on a clearing attempt, etc) from likely going to another SCF

Go back and re-look at the 1998/1999 Roster.

That was a team that needed a HOF goalie to even make the playoffs.

It's success was a testament to Hasek's greatness, not the team that was built (or Ruff's coaching).

They had 2 3rd lines and 1 2nd line and a slightly above average defense.

With anyone other than Hasek, it wasn't a playoff team.

Darcy's track record post Hasek wasn't good. Now, there is a caveat that the team was without an owner for a few years, so he doesn't get blame for that. 11 seasons post Hasek, he made the playoffs 4 times. In the post 7/1/07 era, he made the playoffs twice and never won a playoff round.

He simply was an unspectacular GM who was (reportedly) very hard to work with (in terms of other teams) and over valued his own players.

We romanticized the Hasek era and the Co-Captains era a bit here because we simply haven't been good since. Hasek was, simply put, the best player of the late 90s/early 2000s and dragged a cheap ownership into playoffs every year but how amazing he was. There is no real modern comparison.

To Post 04 lockout team was a pure lightning in the bottle that was never replicated. It burned hard and fast and ended as quickly as it started.

That entire team was inherited, not sure what made it Darcy's

no, it wasn't.

many key acquisitions were made by Darcy

Sanderson, Warrener, Patrick, Barnes, Juneau

then the 2001 team included Dumont, Gilmour, Gratton, Heinze, Audette

You put Sanderson, Juneau, and Patrick on this list, so i can't tell if this is serious or satire

Good points on why they fired the strength and condition coach (Quinn and Cozens shape)

A message to the non believers as well

They would like to see Gionta brought in also

Did they do any homework at all before I listen to this?

It's only twenty some minutes. Although maybe they recorded it before the Lou and Holland flip off ? But at least someone in this town is being honest and as they say not blowing smoke up asses.

They did do good homework on what some other organizations have in their front offices (as far as Senior advisors) which was appreciated.

re: Burke, If Terry could not deal with Pat Lafontaine for 6 months I don't think Burke would be welcome anywhere near the organization because Terry (like similiar ego's in the world) needs his ego stroked and that's not what Burke is going to do even if reporting to Adams.

If Chris Pronger was anything special it seems it seems like Philly would have retained him.

Wasn't Pronger the one that pushed to draft Sam Morin?

I didn’t have time to listen. Did they spitball Pronger as an option or did they hear his name as a potential option?
I "think" they are spitballin on Senior Advisor, Pronger and now Burke.

I would like to see Ryan Miller and Gionta involved in the organization, but without experience and the desperation of the times not seeing a fit. Miller is also a West Coast guy now.

Bringing in gionta and miller sound like great moves the next gm will do to incorporate the sabres past

If I were them I wouldn't touch the franchise until under new management or you are setting yourself up for failure in my opinion
