Huh?
Darcy's team literally nearly won the cup, with the moves that Darcy made in 1999. Also, had an outstanding 2001 team that was a successive series of freak incidents (puck falling from the sky, smehlik whiffing on a clearing attempt, etc) from likely going to another SCF
Go back and re-look at the 1998/1999 Roster.
That was a team that needed a HOF goalie to even make the playoffs.
It's success was a testament to Hasek's greatness, not the team that was built (or Ruff's coaching).
They had 2 3rd lines and 1 2nd line and a slightly above average defense.
With anyone other than Hasek, it wasn't a playoff team.
Darcy's track record post Hasek wasn't good. Now, there is a caveat that the team was without an owner for a few years, so he doesn't get blame for that. 11 seasons post Hasek, he made the playoffs 4 times. In the post 7/1/07 era, he made the playoffs twice and never won a playoff round.
He simply was an unspectacular GM who was (reportedly) very hard to work with (in terms of other teams) and over valued his own players.
We romanticized the Hasek era and the Co-Captains era a bit here because we simply haven't been good since. Hasek was, simply put, the best player of the late 90s/early 2000s and dragged a cheap ownership into playoffs every year but how amazing he was. There is no real modern comparison.
To Post 04 lockout team was a pure lightning in the bottle that was never replicated. It burned hard and fast and ended as quickly as it started.
