After Ovi, who needs the Cup the most to cement their status?

Who are the players that have had outstanding careers so far that you really feel like need the cup cement their status as one of the best of current generation (and last) ?

Guys I personally hope will take it (unlikely as it may be): Thornton or Lundqvist.

Players I think have a good chance: Rinne and Stamkos.

None of them are comparable directly but just my personal opinion on players who kinda need it.

You need more than just win a cup to cement your status, you need to be a main asset on the team probably that probably too late for Thornton, passenger on a cup team does not do much.

Karlsson, if Price make a come back in the next 2-3 year's would really be helped by one with that massive lower time period in is career. Rinne is a good pick.

Lundqvist/Luongo do feel quite cimented in comparison.

For McDavid chance are he will dominate so much, that cups or no cups he will clearly put has one of the best 3 players of is time.

Lundqvist, Luongo and Rinne don't have Cups, but they at least have a Finals appearance as starting goalies which is more than most goalies get.

For skaters, it's Thornton and Marleau. After that... maybe if Ilya Kovalchuk won a Cup he'd become in the HOF conversation? I'm looking down the active points leaders and I don't think Spezza or Pavelski or Parise have much shot at the Hall even with a Cup. Maybe Giroux but he's young enough I put him with Stamkos and Tavares as still making their bones.

Kinda depends on what "cementing status" means in this case.

Thornton or Marleau could win it but they're not the leaders of the team. Does it matter as much then?

Ovie wasn't exactly as important as he maybe was before in his career but still won the Conn Smythe (deserved or not).

So I think being an important player (top5) and winning the Cup is what actually matters.

Bob is young enough to still cement his legacy, but a cup may fast track him towards a HOF possibility.

The guy has 2 vezinas, currently the second best sv percentage among all active goaltenders. A few more good seasons and a cup, and you may be looking at someone who ends their career around 400 wins, and a good amount of hardware

Erik Karlsson. 2 Norris trophies without the Cup.
Sergei Bobrovsky. 2 Vezinas without the Cup. Damn, he hasn't won even a playoffs series yet.

Of course it doesn’t. Context is everything. Always is, always will be.

Speaking of this, I came to think about Ladislav Kohn when a thread about best Leaf winger ever came up on this board. (for some reason I thought he would become something in the late 90s, playing on Sundin’s wing perhaps, don’t ask why)

So, ended up on the guys wiki page and there he is on a photo with the Cup raised over his head in his hometown (in Czech Republic).

Turned out he played 4 regular season games one year with Detroit. (when they won the Cup, must have been 02)

4. Regular season. Games.

And he’s with the Cup in his hometown in Europe, raising it over his head. In a fairly big crowd of people.
