Confirmed with Link: Afanasyev signed to one year deal

My bad, everyone, I was misinformed. Nonetheless surprised it's one-way as it still indicates that he's likely to be kept up with the big club since we'd be paying him the same either way.
It's an extremely common misconception and I blame lazy journalists for it (I'm sure the misconception predates the video games that are often blamed).

I do agree though that it tends to make the team commit a little more to the players with the one-way contract but it doesn't mean they can't or won't be sent down. Givani Smith was an example of how the Sharks treated someone with a one-way at this rate. He was kept up for the longest time even without playing much. Was waived and sent down to the Barracuda just before being traded to Colorado. He'll get his shot but the one way won't keep him up but it will likely mean increased odds in being kept up.

This is a neither here nor there signing. Its a placeholder most likely to buy time for musty, cherny, et al to marinate. I mean, 6'4, 210 is great size and he was point per game in the AHL, so who knows... maybe its a diamond in the rough. I have low expectations but for a 1 yr 800k deal, it doesnt matter.

The only down side is that he takes up a roster spot. That said, it's not like the sharks are short those right now. They have only 5 real forwards (ek, will, mack, wenn, toff) and a few secondaries (graf, dyl, good, grund), but they definitely have at least 4-5 regular starter spots along with a few benchwarmers. Afanasyev is a low risk signing, so Im all for it. Feels kinda like a Zadina-type move. That one obviously didnt work, but perhaps it was worth the shot. Lastly, I suppose next year is still not set up to compete for the POs, so even if he completely bombs, its no biggy, and the upside is alot bigger than a givani smith or the like. lastly, though hes russian, he played 2 years in the USHL and three more pro years, so his english is fine.

Can you guys imagine that his size fits on the wing with mack or smith and he goes for 30-30? MMMMmmmm.... one can dream :)

Side note: I wonder why Gurionov (who played with Egor) is not in the NHL?

BTW, how interesting would it be if Cherny makes the team? hes a right shot and afanasyev is a left shot, so the sharks could re-sign kostin for one more year and create the oversized russian line. Three guys with skill around 6'4, 210-230 pounds.

To be perfectly honest, I would totally give that a shot. Whats the harm? They dont work and you lose games?

What if they find chemistry and their size and skill gives other teams fits. I like it!

Honestly think Askarov getting traded to Sharks had a big influence on Afanasyev coming back to the NHL. They are best buds from their time with the Milwaukee Admirals. Hopefully it motivates him to play well to keep a spot on the NHL roster as Askarov is likely to be with the Sharks fulltime starting this upcoming season. I'm hopeful he can be a good third liner and it would be nice if he could stick with Wennberg and Graf to give us another line that can produce.

Congrats...a cooolbaby?
You know, the name was originally supposed to be tongue in cheek, like a surfer bro saying "cooooool, duuuude" but I didn't go far enough, like my buddy who was CaliSurferBoy420 on Snapchat. I've considered going with like, GaetzLuvr23, but at this point it's kind of the name I've had for 18 years right? Ah well. We did better with the kid's name.

Found @coooldude and offspring.

CSKA was the initiator of the contract termination with Afanasyev. The club considered that he plays for a smaller salary than he receives. The club offered to terminate the contract and sign a new one for a smaller salary, corresponding to the level of his play.
This information from the CSKA management.
So he came back in NA not because of Askarov. He just played meh in KHL.
Let’s see how he will do in NHL/AHL.

What was his role like on the team? Usually they seem very stacked so players can tend to get little ice time

Maybe it's just a translation issue, but this makes CSKA kinda sound like assholes. "hey, we don't think you're earning your pay. So we're "offering" you the chance to get cut and sign a cheaper deal because we're so magnanimous."

Sounds like the KHL

I fell like an old school Yakov Smirnoff joke belongs here, but I can't think of a good tie-in to this scenario, so here's this:
