This is a neither here nor there signing. Its a placeholder most likely to buy time for musty, cherny, et al to marinate. I mean, 6'4, 210 is great size and he was point per game in the AHL, so who knows... maybe its a diamond in the rough. I have low expectations but for a 1 yr 800k deal, it doesnt matter.
The only down side is that he takes up a roster spot. That said, it's not like the sharks are short those right now. They have only 5 real forwards (ek, will, mack, wenn, toff) and a few secondaries (graf, dyl, good, grund), but they definitely have at least 4-5 regular starter spots along with a few benchwarmers. Afanasyev is a low risk signing, so Im all for it. Feels kinda like a Zadina-type move. That one obviously didnt work, but perhaps it was worth the shot. Lastly, I suppose next year is still not set up to compete for the POs, so even if he completely bombs, its no biggy, and the upside is alot bigger than a givani smith or the like. lastly, though hes russian, he played 2 years in the USHL and three more pro years, so his english is fine.
Can you guys imagine that his size fits on the wing with mack or smith and he goes for 30-30? MMMMmmmm.... one can dream
Side note: I wonder why Gurionov (who played with Egor) is not in the NHL?
