AEG Sale Canceled / Leiweke Leaving Company / Kings Owners Not Changing

I thought part of the sale was contingent on Lieweke staying on as the boss and continue running everything ?

I get what you are saying and I have heard this same thought process elsewhere, but its not as if Leiweke is a ownership partner, he's an employee. Anschutz may not have been happy with going forward with an NFL stadium, but to say he "wanted nothing to do with the NFL" doesn't make any sense at all. If indeed he didn't want anything to do with the NFL he could have simply told TL to kill the deal, or never start it in the first place. After all, he is the boss, the owner, and TL is an employee. He must have given his blessing, however reluctant, in order for TL to move as aggressively forward as he did.

The more likely scenario is Leiweke got fired (sorta) for not bringing the NFL here under the conditions Anschutz wanted.

Phil doesn't strike me as the type of man that tolerates failure.

My understanding was AEG wanted the NFL (but under very strict conditions) basically AEG wanted all the profits, and to own the stadium. Which the NFL would not agree too.


The whole sale thing is a shrewd businessman's move by Phil. He put his empire out there at it's apex to see if anyone would bite(people did but with paltry offers).
 
It can be argued that Timothy Leiweke was the albatross around the Kings neck and that the curse was broken when Lombardi was hired

This has been the real issue with the AEG deal and the NFL. The NFL wants control of everything and doesnt like any of the proposals AEG has brought to the table.

What I don't understand is that if AEG builds and pays for the stadium, how could the NFL come in and say they own it?
 
It also could be that if AEG was sold and TL stuck around, his duties would have been solely with the Kings. He wouldn't be wearing so many hats, so to speak. It would mesh with wanting to spend more time around his family, like he has hinted at.

No sale takes place, Anshutz wants someone to do more than TL is willing, and boom, mutual parting.

This is what the NFL does. Usually they don't even have to have another corporation build a stadium, because they will convince city/state governments to build a stadium, and give all the operating profits to the team. AEG wanted to buy shares of teams at their existing price, then watch that share gain value when the team is moved to LA. The NFL wanted AEG to pay the price that they would be worth in LA, thus keeping 100% of the increased value from moving to LA in the pockets of the existing NFL team owner. My guess is that Tim Leiweke bet his future at AEG that he could convince an NFL owner to take AEG's deal, and was forced out when it failed.

The NFL would never play by Anschutz's conditions anyways because they can't give up their strategy of convincing the public to pay for stadiums or lose their teams. They already used the threat of LA to convince Minnesota to pay for a new stadium for the Vikings and Buffalo to pay for improvements for the Bills. San Diego is next, and I fear the City here will be stupid enough to buy the Chargers a downtown stadium. Once AEG is out of the NFL picture, they will either use City of Industry/Chavez Ravine as threats, or shift to using San Antonio/Toronto/London as bait for local governments to waste public sector funds on stadiums that get used 10 days a year. As long as governments somewhere are willing to give stadiums to NFL teams, this game will continue.

As excited about Farmers Field as I was when it was announced, I'm glad that Anschutz isn't playing their game. When AEG officially abandons this plan, I hope they use the site to build New Dodger Stadium, which will be a much better use of that land.
 
There is some good reading in the LA times today.

Their site now only allows yo to read like 2 or 3 articles, so I can't go back in to reference them. But reading between the lines, it looks like this wasn't voluntary on TL's part....

Someone who claimed to be a "personal friend of Tim Leiweke " called (anonymously)into the KABC 790 AM morning show a moment ago, and a few mildly interesting points were mentioned (paraphrasing):
  • He claimed that Phillip Anschutz himself has "no clue" how to deal with the politicians in Los Angeles; it was Leiweke who had done all the legwork (backroom deals) that got Staples Center and LA Live approved and built.
  • The whole football process was moving "way too slowly" for Anschutz’s liking, so that's why he pulled out of it.
  • Letting go of Leiweke (and the caller specifically said, "Let go") is a "major mistake," because now Anschutz will have to become directly involved, and deal with people he doesn't know how hard it will be to deal with.
Take it FWIW (maybe nothing; just mildly interesting)...

That's Magic's group, right? Assuming the caller's first point is accurate, I can see they would feel Leiweke would be an asset in helping them "expand" Dodger Stadium...
 
Wonder how close Leiweke is with Roski as Roski is the one heading the push for a stadium in the City of Industry. It makes a lot of sense for the Guggenheim Group to hire Leiweke, given his extensive background in sports, he could really help them expand their sports ventures beyond the Dodgers and Dodgers Stadium.

This makes some sense too. Roski owns part of the Kings, so he surely(you can't be serious) knows Roski

There was a blurp in the LA times though that the NFL doesn't like the Industry stadium idea.....

Interesting stuff. For a guy who is a total recluse, I find it hard to believe Anscutz can just stroll in and just pick up the handshakes that Leiweke has established with the cities politicians. I wonder if he's even met or even knows a single city council member.

He's certainly not as buddy-buddy with the LA City Council as Leiweke is.

I guess we know now why Leiweke was fired. Not-so-kind remarks about his boss being disclosed as part of the Jackson trial.

"The chief executive of AEG referred to his own boss as a “paranoid scrooge” in an email exchange when the entertainment firm was preparing to promote Michael Jackson’s anticipated comeback tour in 2009.

Tim Leiweke, long the public face of AEG and an influential figure in Los Angeles, made the reference to Phillip Anschutz in a March 13, 2009, email to Randy Phillips, the chief executive of AEG Live, the company’s concert arm.

In a public forum.
As far as the email not really a big deal.
It is just the lawyers throwing a bunch of meaningless babble out there to confuse the issue. So Uncle Phil didnt want his employees scalping tickets. So Tmmay thought worring about empolyees tickets was silly. It still is not the reason MJ was injected with propranol
