Player Discussion Adam McQuaid

This is often over-looked, he's made less than 5 million in his career just in total salary, not including union dues, income tax, etc.

He's going to get a very nice pay-day from some team this summer given his skill-set, lack of depth amongst available UFA D-men, he's a right-handed shot(which is rarer) and his propensity to stick up for his teammates. I just don't think it will be the Bruins, nor should it be.

This is incredible. Stand up guys like him deserve to at least be able to retire comfortably.

:handclap: Thank you Adam for always sticking up for your team mates no matter what. You were truly part of the heart and soul of the winning culture in Boston.

Engelland's contract is going to set McQuaid up for a real nice payday. I love the guy. Good for him. He deserves it. Even though it's very unlikely to be in Boston.

Have a bad feeling about our future, missed drafts are killing us right now.

I also hope that this new era means that the bad contracts are over, try to give Hamilton 5x5 and then when he is 26 he gets his huge contract if he is worth that and is our #1D, he'd still be in his prime through that contact and we need to find a way to do signings like this, give huge contracts to players that are in their prime through that or as close as possible.

I hate this but we just don't have the luxury to keep players like McQ and Soda, we can keep them because we love them but that won't give us any points in the regular season, our D group with Hamilton overpaid and McQ re-signed could be bottom 5-10 in the league.

Article yesterday asked that could the bruins start the season with

Chara-Hamilton
Seidenberg-Miller
Krug-McQ/Trotman/Morrow,

who is going to fear that D? All of our cap would go to D and that's still very very very very weak D with brutal scoring from our forwards.

I'm just glad that Chia is gone but Sweeney has a difficult challenge ahead of him, start is to shred cap from our bottom players.

At least Don S. IMO has a handle on the problems and most likely has a solid plan in mind. DS is a guy who always has to prove himself no matter the amount of education, the YEARS on the Boston blueline, the YEARS in the front office etc. IF anyone can/will keep Quaider if he can, it's "The Don!"

Thing is, Quaider is so awesome he may take some dollars over extended years. Of anyone on our roster he would be the most likely for a "hometown discount" even though I believe he only rents in town and loves his PEI.
I would hope so but he doesn't really owe the B's anything, he is worth whatever the market will pay.

I think BB would move Looch first. Then use the dough on re-signing Hamilton, McQ, and others. But thats me.

:yo: My feelings exactly, if Looch played all out all the time (which would cut his career in half) the way McQuaid does we would want to keep him too. We can not afford to lose McQ's tenacity, especially now. IF we still had Johnny Boychuk and his toughness than Adam would be expendable but right now we can't afford to lose guys with his attitude, game, experience and conviction.

somebody will offer him 2.5-2.75 for 3-4 years. B's won't match that, which sucks because for most of the season my ******* puckered up the least when McQuaid was out there.

Let's not be too premature thinking that DS won't find a way to keep a guy like Adam. Afterall Adam is the kind of player that the Don will be looking to add. Let's give Sweeney time to see what he can do before we assume that it'll be "business as usual" ala Chiapet.

This has next to nothing to do with Don S and everything to do with how much of a hometown discount, if any, Adam is willing to give us IMO. Don S can be the best GM in the world and it won't matter if the player in question simply isn't willing to take less than the market will bear.

I loved McQ in our 3rd pairing but the honest question is that should we really re-sign him when this team is top6 winger+top4 D short and we have Miller/Trotman under 1M locked up.

McQ's value is somewhere in the 3-4M range, if he takes a hometown discount at 2-2.5 that still means that we just lost 1.2-1.7M cap space by re-signing him at hometown discount instead of Miller/trotman remembering this team is short on top talent.

And why the ***** should he??? McQ deserves every penny he can get out of them. The Bruins still need to pay fair market price for his services! It's up to DS to make the moves needed to keep him.

Hypothetical question: Who would you rather have? Smith at $3.4 million or McQ at $2.8 million?

Great answer.:shakehead

Fine. Don't like it. I'll spell it out for you: His job is to provide his coach with the best roster possible. Not to make whatever moves are necessary to free up money for one third line defender whose cheaper replacement is already on the roster.

Why the attitude, man?

Signed top4D.

I hate it but we don't have the luxury to spend that kind of money to bottom6/bottom pairing players.

Keeping up one of them with that price costs us that top4D/top6 winger that this team badly needs.

But if I had to take one of those contracts it would easily be McQ, easily.

The correct answer is neither.

If you have to keep one, Smith. Smith's a 24 year old who has played 80+ games in both seasons, with an average of 45 pts, the potential for some upside exists there. McQuaid will be 29 when the season starts, is no better than a bottom pairing stay at home with no upside at all, and the next time he plays 80+ regular season games will be the first.

So he's the one based on Sweeney meeting with media today.

Good move - 3 years /8 would work for me

Character
Winner
Tough
Can kill penalties
4-6 level but worth it

Would love to see McQuaid stay, guy is a constant physical presence who cares, when healthy he is an elite 3rd pairing D-man, who can move up in a pinch.

I'm OK with it IF Seidenberg is on the way out. Chara + Seidenberg + McQuaid is two many pairs of slow legs for my liking.

Also that is almost 14M cap tied to those 3 players, Seids needs to go and our 3rd pairing has to be Morrow-McQ, has to be and that can be a strong one.

I'd love to keep McQ but the cap scares me, hamilton, mcQ, lucic, kelly, seids questions are huge for Sweeney.

Also koko, kemppainen needs to be in the lineup next year on under 1M contracts contributing to our team.

And if the Bruins are making roster moves to cater to bottom pairing defenseman, then I think we are in trouble. Listen, I love McQuaid, and for him personally, yea, he deserves every cent he can get. But if the Bruins expect to rebound, they need to look forward. They were a good team because they had a lot of young players on good contracts, mixed with some of their other players in their primes. Some of those other players are now older, with bigger contracts; and we need to shift again. McQuaid at 1.8 on the bottom pair is great. McQuaid at 3+ on the bottom pair is not.

The Bruins are loaded with low-mid-tier talent on overpaid contracts. This is Sweeney's chance to fix some of them, not add some more.

$2.8/yr for Quaider would make me wince, considering the current situation. Way too much for a bottom pairing player, heart and soul guy or not.

5-6 level only
constantly injured
zero upside
zero transition game

Bad start to the Sweeney era.

I love Quaider, I do and I'd love for him to return but I just don't see how that's the proper use of our cap. Even if he signs for 1.5 or something we can get guys in here on ELCs. And the guy is made of glass.

If he is returning though, that means Sweeney must be getting rid of a big cap hit somehow. We need to get rid of Kelly obviously but to get Dougie and Quaider and Spooner and Connolly someone else's $ has to be leaving. Seids?

I'm with you on this. Love McQuaid but this team has bigger issues than over-paying for a 3rd pair D-man when they have Miller and Trotman and Morrow knocking on the door.

He is so damn unnecessary right now. It's not as much of a knock on him as a player as it is about needing to address other needs on a cap-strapped roster.

I would be furious if they used up cap space to bring him back.
