From what I saw in the World Champs he would be ready to play an NHL role, but not sure it does him good as he would not yet contribute as much as would be good for him to do.

This team is going to be hella fun to follow.

The more I think the more I feel Fantilli offers them perfect potential.

It comes with a bigger risk than Carlsson but if he hits you have a top 5/8 player in the league at center

Never in a million years would you have guessed that a year ago

So what are your thoughts on year 2 at Michigan vs CBJ ?

I'm not sure what another year at Michigan does for his development but I don't want him rushed to the league. I guess I'd rather have him in the CBJ/Cleveland combo than Michigan. If he's ready for the NHL great if not Cleveland a great option.

Pretty sure he’ll never play a game in the AHL. if he doesn’t go back to UM he’ll be on the CBJ roster.

This made me so happy!
I was convinced Fantilli was going at #2 and the CBJ would pass over Carllson.
But I'm thrilled with Fantilli, and he sounds thrilled to be here.
I'm guessing he goes back to Michigan for one more year (I could be wrong) but we will see him in March.

He's. Better. At. Center.
Possibly.. he also has major back problems . Where he’s pushed to the point of tears trying to play thru the pain , because of his back issues . The front office was furious with how much Boone was overused this past season , and ultimately want him at the wing , because his back isn’t going to get better . Center requires you taking face offs, practicing faceoffs, the additional defensive responsibilities .

It's going to come down to development. Do the Jackets have the right people doing the player development and position/skills coaching on the staff?

OK, it's time to quote myself here :)

This is from Feb 6:
CBJ finishes last, drops down 1 place in lottery and picks Fantilli 2nd OA. At the time of draft there's no separation to speak of between Fantilli & Carlsson, but the FO liked Fantilli better by interview. Bedard goes to a team outside the true tankers by massive lottery luck. Philadelphia maybe? You heard it here first, maybe I'll buy a lottery ticket next :P

Commenting on my predictive super powers here, interesting with the Bedard stuff, but Flyers "lucked" into Michkov... and I guess not that many people would be overly surprised if he eventually ended up becoming the best player of this draft. Maybe I was indeed onto something!

And from May 10:
My latest prediction, Anaheim will pick Carlsson 2nd OA and we take Fantilli. Are we at a point yet where we'll be disappointed at that?

Since those quotes I had talked myself into believing it'll be Carlsson :D Still, can't say I'm too surprised it ended up being Fantilli!

Seems like a good pick and a kind kid. Hopefully we are patient with his development and it ends up being a good fit for all involved.

Was going to put this in the draft thread but this is better and that can still serve as an ongoing GDT for the draft.

Here are m y thoughts on having drafted Fantilli, although I admit the comparison is between he and Carlsson, and we are faced with the possibility our choice was never between them anyway but between Fantilli and Smith, but be that as it may...

I had really warmed to the idea of a skilled, heady, 200-foot centerman, a classic top-liner who does it all but also has elite skill.

But as the draft neared, and again maybe this was just me overthinking it or reassessing with the questions at 2-3-4, but I began to regret the lost opportunity at a skating, checking, still-responsible centerman with elite skill could bring to the lineup. The idea that Fanatilli could not only be a great talent but also wear on teams with his skating, physicality and relentless motor was intriguing.

(Someone else posted similar thoughts, but I don't recall who. I "liked" their post whoever it was.)

So here we are. I question the rest of the 'scoring" forwards but I could really get behind a team that gets after its opponents, that grinds them down not just with checking and physical play but relentless forechecking, pursuit and skating, taking away space.

Similar to what the Jackets were able to execute against Tamp in 2019. Their lack of elite talent and lack of a plan they could execute when the other team matched your relentlessness ultimately doomed them against Boston, but there's maybe added talent ready to contribute on this roster?

Much as I love to see great skill and hockey IQ, a relentless team is my favorite style of hockey. I'm hoping that's what Babcock decides to do, and I hope Fantilli shines.

None of this has anything to do with center or wing. It just means we need more guys to take on minutes rather than dumping on him.

I know this is the Fantilli thread and I am excited about it. But the topic of Boone came up. I am as big a fan as anyone and believe he is a good center (I prefer him at center), especially where he is the complimentary player on a line with skill/scorers. Kind of ideal really.

As for how long he will be able to do it, the back issues have to be worrisome and his minutes must be reduced. Speed has never been one of Boone's best assets so it isn't likely to be his downfall as he slows but let's be honest, Boone's physical style of play often leads to a sudden and precipitous decline in offense which is hard to predict the timing of. I think of a guy like RJ Umberger,

2008-2013: averaging about .27 Gs/Game and .49 Pts/Games fairly consistent for six seasons
2014: .13 Gs/Game and .22 Pts/Games
2015: .05 Gs/Game and .23 Pts/Games

Love Boone but nobody should be surprised if his offensive production simply vanishes from one year to the next. I hope it doesn't happen for awhile but I won't be surprised when it does.

I don’t think Boone will be around much longer.
Trading the captain?
Congrats on getting Fantilli, was really happy to see him to to you guys after the Ducks galaxy brained it at #2. Nice bit of justice after you got hosed by the lottery.

On a lighter note, there's something to be said about a Columbus based sports team drafting a Wolverine to be the face of the franchise, haha.

Sing it with me, guys! "ITS GREAT, TO BE, A MICHIGAN WOLVERRRIIIINNNNE, I SAID ITS GREAT, TO BE, A MICHIGAN WOLVERRRIIIINNE"
Damn right it is.. Go Blue!
Between Werenski, Fanta, and K. Johnson, I’m fine being a surrogate Wolverine.
Welcome :D
Back on the topic of Fantilli, I wonder if he discreetly let ANA know that he really didn't want to go there and preferred us significantly? I personally didn't hear any of the "I may go back to college" stuff until the last 7-10 days & I wonder if that was a sort of, "I'm not gonna be there next year" message to the Ducks.?

Either way, excited to have him, as I would've been for Carlson, and I hope he does some phenomenal things for us.
Had the same thought last night. Wondered if maybe he went through the ANA interview a little less enthusiastic and gave off the impression he preferred elsewhere.

Or ANA just trusted their scouting and had Carlsson at 2 all along. Or both!

The guy Fantilli reminds me of more than anyone is early career Nathan Mackinnon.

Incredible physical gifts, but has some legit questions about hockey sense. Skates the puck into trouble. A few years into his career Mackinnon figured it out and added whole layers of deception to his game. If Fantilli can do that then his upside is just as high.
I like this comparison, that actually makes a lot of sense.

I have confidence in his ability to grow his hockey sense playing at a higher level with some guys that can help him out. Even simply playing in the league for a few years is enough for guys to figure it out. I don't think hockey sense stops improving at 18.

This is stupid but, anecdotally, my highest level playing was high school, but now in my later 20s, I feel like I am a much smarter player now than I was as a kid. If my hockey sense can improve into adulthood, then I'm damn sure Fantilli's can.

Foudy gives up #19, right?
No reason to. It's still available in Cleveland.

On another note...........

According to one of the"highlight reels" posted earlier in the thread, Fantilli was tracking to have the highest PPG for a draft-eligible player in NCAA D1 since Paul Kariya-which was 30 years ago. Higher than Eichel.

Absolutely zero hockey reasons for him to return to UM. With the changes in RFA compensation -well, maybe not with Jarmo;)-I'm sure his agent can make a compelling case to him for going pro immediately. He legitimately could cost himself over $5 million in career earnings by spending another year in college. The agent should resign if he can't convince him. LOL

Eichel was a very similar level prospect to Fantilli.

He scored 56 points in his rookie season and Buffalo was a tire fire back then. I would argue Fantilli would enter into a much healthier situation in Columbus, better coach, easily better defense and star caliber linemates

What’s really good with Fantilli is the speed element, nice to have a top prospect who’s strenght is skating

I am just going to leave this here:

While I am excited about Fantilli, my top choice at #3 would have been Carlsson regardless of the other options available. It's possible Fantilli has the higher ceiling but I think Carlsson has a very high ceiling and would have been the safer pick. Just my gut feeling.

Just feels like the LaFreniere, Stutzle and Byfield dilemma for me. I far preferred Stutzle of the three.

Whose also a physical monster. It's usually one or the other... And he's the best of both worlds with a top notch IQ to go with it.

Right? I had a non-hockey-following friend text me about this today. This and the love the Jackets getting for taking Fantilli.

Was it a stroke of genius?
No. It was a no brainer. At least in terms of draft rankings which can be notoriously off. Remember Nail Yakopov? I doubt Fantilli has that potential for bust.

But more to your point, it has excited a lot of people-myself included.
