Prospect Info: Adam Engstrom

Matheson is all offense, Engstrom is a two way type. I don't think he has much offensive upside or at least he doesn't seem to know what he wants to do when he enters the zone other then skate around with the puck. I think he will be a decent NHLer, solid bottom pairing D perhaps unless he can progress by a good bit in the next couple of years.
Matheson is all offense right now. He was not at Engstrom's age.

Matheson played one year in the AHL and did 20 points in 54 games. The first time Matheson reached 30 points (AHL, NHL) was at 27 years old.

Let's not forget that Engstrom is an ambitious man. He wants to become the best moreso than the average player, based on his comments in the last years.

It's great that he's ambitious. But some defenders can only improve their defensive IQ so much. Otherwise, everyone would try to be Slavin on the defensive end and not Gustafsson or Nicolas Beaudin.

I know but he's an ace in the hole, a wild card. Probably it won't amount to much, but you never know.

Ive followed the Not-so-Magic Mike since 2012 and this is bogus. Hes always been the all-offense balls to the wall make you gouge your eyes out kind of player. He pretty much terrorized defense with Johnny Hockey and Hayes at BC. He looked like Bobby Orr most games and he even was named to the allstar team in the NCAA as a freshman.

I did not talk about junior.

Engstrom has been playing pro since he was 18 don't think anybody here have seen him plays in junior. Matheson in the AHL and NHL took a long time to figure it out. Sorry but i don't recall balls to the wall Matheson in Florida at all. I remember holes to the basement Matheson very clearly though. Back then he was taking the wrong decisions both offensively and defensively all the time. Florida traded him for a foot into retirement Hornqvist with one of NHL's worst contract for a reason.

Well yeah thats just Matheson when he's not lucky like last year.

Oh Matheson would be a straight menace in the AHL too

He does have a lot of the same flaws and quality as Matheson.
I’ve been a long time fan of Engstrom. Hope he irons out the flaws. His skating is wild. At least he’s a better playmaker than Matheson and shot. If he’s a stop gap 3rd pairing Matheson clone that’s not the worst thing in the world

He has really good hands and skating just like Matheson. Remains to be seen if he is the physical freak Matheson is but I'm sure he can be at least a bottom pairing D.

Ive also liked that he started being physical a little bit.

I can't stand watching Matheson but I doubt Engstrom is a better playmaker or a better shot. I don't think his offensive game is anything special, he just seems solid at most things.

The good thing about having depth on D is you don't have to rush some younger guys and can be more patient with them.

In the Bergevin era we'd see guys like Tinordi, Beaulieu, Fleury, Juulsen, Mete, Fleury, Norlinder etc getting called up with a year or less of experience in the AHL because of our shitty D depth.

In the case of Engstrom he's showed a lot of good things but the best for his development at this point would be more time in the AHL so its best to show patience and keep him down there for now.
