Prospect Info: Adam Engstrom

He needs another year in Laval with maybe 10 or so games in the NHL.

Might be a decent trade chip if another team really wants him.

Hope he makes the NHL either here or elsewhere though, would be nice for the Habs to finally draft a Swede who isn't a total bust

Engstrom looks like he is close to NHL ready. Given our depth on left D he could be a trade chip this summer
Sorry but he is not close. He isn't strong enough and makes too many mistakes. He has elite skating but he needs strength and more improvement on the D side.
He is a player I would keep to replace some LD like Struble and Matheson in a year or two

He reminds me of Matheson and I mean this both as a praise and a critique.

Fantastic mobility could get him far, but he really has a knack for bad decisions at inopportune moments.

Really hoping he can iron out his game and be the Matheson replacement.
Really hoping he irons out his game and becomes both the Guhle and Matheson replacements at the same time. Guhle can get traded as the main cog of a package for a young 2C during this offseason, someone perhaps like Matt Beniers. Matheson can get traded at the deadline this upcoming season and the assets acquired for him can serve to land a rental RHD veteran for the last stretch of the season and into the playoffs.

After next season, Engström can become that second line LHD.

Matheson - Carrier
Struble - Hutson
Xhekaj - Reinbacher

Becomes:

Hutson - Acquired RHD
Struble - Reinbacher
Xhekaj - Carrier

Becomes:

Hutson - Reinbacher
Engström - Carrier
Struble/Xhekaj - Mailloux

I don't understand why people are so eager to dismiss Engstrom this year.

I said last year he was right there with our other blueline prospects, might turn out to be the best.

Hutson emerged as a star so he broke my argument, but other than that, I'm not sure Mailloux and Reinbacher will end up better.

I was thrilled on Engstrom development in europe and he's on the curve to become a good 2nd pair D in due time. Defensemen need time to polish their game, especially coming from big ices but he's got that potential and keeps progressing. Patience, it looks like the iq match the skills and body. We good. ;)

When you skate like he does anything is possible. He has been outstanding the entire year and into the playoffs!

Yes he's an excellent skater but he has no toughness and is kind of a turnover machine. Play in his own end is not a strength.

Not a lot of room in the NHL for those type of D's.

He needs time and reps. The game was probably fast to him on the small ice at the start of the season. He's still ahl bound next year and probably learned a couple of things this season which will determine his off-season training routine.

If he makes it, he'll have to have a partner like Carrier to compensate somewhat but we see that all the time.

There's no rush, development often takes time outside of the highest end prospects, but especially so for defense. Another year in Laval to work on adding strength and mass, work with him to try and cut down on the turnovers. The IQ just might not be there as you see him skate the puck into the zone, skate around the net but it's like he doesn't know what to do with it other then go for a skate. Great skating/mobility for sure, solid two way game but just needs to keep working on things.

I don’t watch and haven’t seen highlights in awhile. But by some comments he almost sounds like a Matheson clone. Your endorsement is reassuring.

Matheson is all offense, Engstrom is a two way type. I don't think he has much offensive upside or at least he doesn't seem to know what he wants to do when he enters the zone other then skate around with the puck. I think he will be a decent NHLer, solid bottom pairing D perhaps unless he can progress by a good bit in the next couple of years.

Let's not forget that Engstrom is an ambitious man. He wants to become the best moreso than the average player, based on his comments in the last years.
