I agree. He is very strong and has good balance to go with the terrific size. He also has solid hands. I wouldn't swap him in for Kreider but on the PP2 he'd provide a different kind of look and could do well.

he's weird in that he gets absolutely no touches with the puck in the offensive zone because he's so committed to getting to the net front. not sure I like that. Carrick and especially Vesey aren't exactly oozing with skill.

Edstrom is a big boy but he needs to fill out. Once he adds the extra muscle he will be immovable on the boards

More than 2 and with his speed and skating, I thought he'd be more of a threat. He scored in Hartford. No reason why he can't do this at the NHL level. Hopefully not another Brodzinski good AHL player but average NHL depth guy

There's a tremendous gulf between those two levels. It's a learning process and he's a rookie early in his first season.

Lower points per 60 in his NHL career than Matt Rempe. 2 years older btw

he's played like 20 games at this level. give the kid a f***ing chance before you decide he's AHL fodder.

or better yet, try not to judge a rookie player by the results but rather by the process. Watch the games. is he noticeable on his shifts? is he playing within himself? is he making plays in all 3 zones? is he forechecking, back checking, creating turnovers, creating netfront havoc, imposing a physical will, making good passes, flashing any skill?

The answer to all of the above is Yes. it's difficult to score in the NHL and takes support from a whole line.

Rookies are taught and expected, especially on the 4th line, to play a certain way to earn their ice time. If they try to be overly aggressive offensively and it leads to chances against, they'll be sat down faster than Sam Rosen can give you the answer to the nights Trivia question.

Edstrom is doing everything he should and more. Unreal that this has to be explained because he only has 2 points playing a 4th line role on a team that features a top 4 d pair that can't complete a pass.

What exactly were people expecting here? As a rookie, if he scores 15 points that's a very good season. He had 16 points in 40 games last year in the AHL. He wasn't going to play less minutes in the NHL per game and score 30 points over 82 games. He hasn't looked out of place, he controls the puck and he is physical all over the ice. Defensively he is solid and he knows how to play a 200' game. Let him develop. Even if he finishes the year with 10 points over 82 games that's fine. He's a net positive on the game overall on that 4th line

In preseason he looked to be trying to do things on his own and challenge the defenders a bit more. Right now it seems like Edstrom is playing off his teammates and looking for them to either drive the line or control the puck.

frankly the Rangers 4th line is........beyond doubt the best 4th line in the league? and Ed is a big part of that. was thrilled to see him get a goal.

A little bit. He's always in and around the puck and involved net front but the puck bounces, however he's also had chances to bury it.

He needs to put on muscle. For a big guy he gets knocked off the puck too much. There's definitely a willingness to play physical that is refreshing though.

Yes, he's knocked opposing players down a few times this season. Definitely engaged.

Id like to see him with Rempe. That 4th line with Mr. Ed Carrick and Rempe looked like something that could be matchup nightmare in training camp and they completely abandoned it. And before anyone gets mad at me, Berard should play higher in the lineup, and someone else should come out for Rempe.

I've advocated for a WCW Skyscrapers line of Rempe-Carrick-Edstrom since the dawn of professional hockeywrestling.

Considering that the 4th line is used primarily to get us out of our own zone, Edstrom has had a really good season. He's basically breakeven in expected goals and most other advanced metrics while getting most of his shift starts in his own zone.

I know he has been on the wing primarily, but can we run him at center at some point? Would not mind seeing him get a shot there if anyone misses time down the middle.

There is definitely untapped potential in his game. They should be looking to use him similarly to how Kreider got used early in his career. Let him fly and try and hit him with some area passes that he can skate into. He'll catch a lot of defensemen off-balance with how quick he will get to them.

Edstrom has been excellent defensively. His long stick, speed, and effort make him a real PITA to play around. Good call

edit: statisically, only 11 players in the league start less in the offensive zone than Edstrom, so this is bang on.
