So if you finish 2nd in sales by $1... you’d let your coworker determine your compensation?

Is this thread even serious? Am I being punk’d for replying?

Please tell me you can read and understand that the barista tip jar is like ten dollars a shift.

Some days it can be in excess of $50 dollars/per shift it really depends on the amount of smiles we give and receive when all is said and done, plus it helps when Jaimee is working because she wears like zero bra and her nips absolutley show through her polo shirt in terms of a very visible and noticable outline which reall gets the jar some extra dollars especially when the construction guys come through. I might see if she can ask the other girls if they can do that too, I would but I dont think HR would find that acceptable even though it could make us even more money.

We aren’t disagreeing on competition. I run a sales org of 40 and we have an incentive trip, uncapped commissions and many other contests along the way.

What I take issue with is the mistake of letting 1 EMPLOYEE determine what each of the other employees take home. Even those that excelled.

It’s lazy management.

And what if this high performing employee decides to give everyone an equal share to spite the boss as a counter protest to his policy? Instant credibility amongst the team and a host of folks that want you fired.

Welcome to Backfire 101.
I guess I never thought about it this way that you are thinking about it and maybe perhaps I should re-think things so that I don't put myself in the "hot seat" with my employees but rather, find a happy middle ground where I am innovating new tip jar contests but they are more involved and committed by self discovering their own contests aligned with mine through a sort of consultative mutually reached resolution? How would you use the tip jar to drive increasingly productive results and maximize "buy-in?"

I can see that my strategy is upsetting to you but it has boosted my store performance significantly in the last week and a halve and I have my team literally "chomping at the bit" to be top producers every single day for the last 11 days. My best sales person has doubled our muffin production and bagels are literally flying off the shelves when he works. I'm mixing up shifts and pairing weakest with strongest next week so at least two people will be the tip jar "starbeasts" every other day instead of just Terrance 24/7 so there is more people getting a shot at the big paydays. Also just so you know I am also assessing character and leadership and I will have u know that Terry straight up bought the whole crew pizzas today with his extra earnings so he is seeing how we can all be engaged and win as a passionate team together FTW and not be hating just because some people are better than others. It's amazing what 4 hot n ready pies will do for morale when it is coming out of someones own pocket and it wasnt even mine this time.

Upsetting? No.

Just offering advice.

Ah, I remember when I was your age. Just a wide-eyed kid with the whole world in front of him, but no idea what to do with it. Sure I had the talent, smarts, looks... but I was naïve and didn't understand how business really worked. My first job was at a mobile phone kiosk in the mall downtown. That's where I really learned the value of hard work. It was 100% commission-based, so if I didn't sell, I didn't eat that night. Long story short, I hustled my *** off and eventually worked my way to where I am now, which is fairly high up in the mobile phone industry.

You'll get there someday.

Ahhh. So this isn’t the Lounge or idea share forum. It’s just the be a dick forum.

Thanks for showing me the way.

You are clearly a f***ing douche.

Sorry I thought this was serious. Totally my fault for choosing to spend time replying.

I guess it’s your dream to be a shift manager at Starbucks instead of a customer.

For the women who work there, hope it never happens. Got a few years though before your brain matures and you reach legal working age. Maybe there’s hope?

I wouldn’t. I would fire your ass.

Assuming you actually have the job.

1. I am not a "shift manager" I am literally the manager of the entire store and my numbers are literally blowing all the other stores in my region away so have some respect I've only been doing this for about a month too so I'm a rookie giving veteran managers a "run for their money" as the saying goes.

2. What the heck is "legal working age?"

Serious question.

Respect? Like the way you talk about your team.

Seriously man, you treat women like that and talk about your team members like that and you’ll only be doing this for another month.

Leadership is not a title.

Why would you hypothetically fire literally your most successful manager?

My... the most successful manager in all of Starbucks after a month of sales. Please.

Why would I fire your ass?

Ethics. Based on how you just talked about your team and wanting the other girls to show nipples to make more money.

And if that doesn’t matter to you... avoiding the inevitable lawsuit that will come.

You’d never manage again with a record like that son.

You are clearly being far to subjective and judgemental and essentially you sound like you are just a jealous hater so unless you are actually here to add to the thread topic and offer up your own actionable things that YOU do to maximize your team through motivation or inspiration then I'm going to have to think about suggesting that you "take a hike" or at a minimum "put a sock in it" because you are literally derailing the thread and its annoying. You're annoying.

Tried to be open to give you some advice about what it means to be a leader.

That derogatory nipple comment about YOUR team members highlighted to me that you are way too juvenile to be in a position of any responsibility.

If you can’t see that and acknowledge it, you aren’t fit to lead them.

The only advice that is really fitting here is to prepare for the inevitable sexual harrassment case and ensure you save enough money to help you through the firing.

Hopefully your family thinks like you do so you won’t have to add personal embarrassment to your pile.

On we go to more useful discussions.

The nipple situation is literally just a "pipe dream" as I would never ask an employee too dress a certain way or even ask an employee to ask another employee to dress a certain way unless it was correcting a dress-code violation so forget the nipple comment you keep focusing in on it's just the human body anyways and you dont need to be so anti-sexuality it's literally 2019. Jeesh.

Also you also sound "ageist" or anti-youth which is just plain ignorant. Its 2019, grow up.

Sales is for nerds. Imagine being paid on commission  Imagine TALKING to people

"Hello Mr. Prospect, may I interest you in [item]"

"Nah fam."

"Okay."

What a f***ing waste of time. Sales is for nerds.

Sometimes you have to be a bit of a "dick" to get ahead in the "business world," but these are some of the things you'll figure out over time. For example, as a boss, I love to be a passive aggressive dick to my employees (or slaves as I sometimes joke), saying things like, "Wow, you finally didn't screw something up. Great job!" It really makes them feel like shit and establishes my authority as the Big Boss, so they fall in line and do exactly as they're told. Don't like it? Well, the results speak for themselves: record profits for the last 8 years and counting.

Good luck out there, champ. It sounds like you'll need it.

So I had to literally "call an audible" for this afternoon and i think this will help balance things out as far as the tip jar controversies that arent actually real yet in irl but hopefully this will help that @Pookie man calm himself down so he will stop with the incessant attacking and trash-talking of my leadership experimentations.

My top seller called off the afternoon mid-shift because he really wants to watch the Rams/Saints championship so I am making my worst employee come in on his day off to work the 3 hour shift. I will be giving him at least halve of the tips in the tip jar for helping me out and doing me this solid and if he out-sells ME I will give him 75% of the tip jar winnings. It's just me and him working the afternoon so may the best seller win!

It’s just advice not to defer your compensation decisions to employees. If you want a winner take all contest, go for it.

My top rep gets a 7 week all inclusive Sandals vacation with a guest.

But I don’t allow my winner to determine what the other top reps take home. We establish the game rules at the beginning of the year and follow through on our promises like a good democracy. It’s not a dictatorship.

—-

Interestingly, YOU are still taking a cut of the tips even if he outsells you.

Yet YOUR policy is that the winner decides who gets what. Let the rep decide if you worked hard enough to get a share of the tips and how much. No one else has a guaranty of 25% of the take.

This inconsistency will be discussed amongst your staff and undermine your authority.
