I don't know why you would trade Fehr. He's cheap and fairly versatile (not to mean he can play center) and probably has very little to no trade value. He can easily be penciled in for the fourth line and rotate up when the need arises without causing problems.
If Laich is retained and kept on the wing, Kuznetsov is kept on the wing, Johansson kept on the wing and Wilson remains with the Caps then they'll have eight wingers returning as it is without him. There needs to be a certain amount of turnover up front and it's really not much of a loss. Maybe a separate trade keeps him in play but a guy like Brown ought to be groomed into what they're trying to do with Fehr now and at a cheaper rate. If they're going to trade for these bottom six type forwards then they need to groom them, reap the savings offered and put real resources into where they're needed instead of paying so much for bottom six forwards (esp. wingers).

Personnel-wise up front I think they've got to make some moves to get better up the middle. They're getting killed in faceoffs and don't really have any degree of versatility at the position. If dishing Fehr is needed for that to happen so be it. I don't think he's really all that valuable. Decent player but that's about it.

He is just victim of George's poor roster management. And, he is not a center. For as great as he was last playoffs, he never scored. If he goes he goes, last time he left few seemed to care. I like the guy and who we could have had instead, but we need changes and it starts by thinning positions of exploding depth, RW and addressing bigger issues.

As I wrote elsewhere, best at faceoffs this season are:
1. Bergeron
2. Malhorta (pending UFA earning 600 K)
3. Boyd Gordon
4. Gaustad

Still don't understand why folks are more interested in trading one of the two 28 year old forwards (Brouwer/Fehr) over a 33 year old Ward. Do some really think that Joel Ward has another season in him like he's having now. He'll be 34 in December. He's got one year remaining on his contract and he's having a career year. I'd trade him straight up for Boyd Gordon. The salary is a wash and you get a 3rd/4th line centerman whose great at face offs (a major issue with this team) and who the Caps are familiar with.

Then Caps try to pursue Kesler with the likes of MAJO and Mike Green +.

In a highly ironic revelation, Ref9 turns out to be an ageist.

This. While it's true that I'm an unabashed F16 apologist, I honestly think he's a useful piece at a cheap price. Only unload him if you find a good deal on an upgrade. He's not part of our problem if used correctly.

I dunno. You did just suggest that the Caps trade Joel Ward for Boyd Gordon, straight up.

As LBJ once said "It's a heck of lot easier to throw grenades then to catch them".

You're quick to poo-poo my idea that would address one of the team's shortcomings, a center that's good at face offs. Well let's hear your solution then.

Sign Malhotra and keep one of our few guys who has size, defensive ability, is great along the boards and consistently steps up in the playoffs.

Need more Wards not less.

Gordon would be a good addition too but rather move Brouwer for him and replace Brouwer with a more useful player.

Eller's 24th on the faceoff leaders list. Might be able to get him along with Gorges, since he was rumored to be available at the deadline. Brouwer + Orlov for Gorges + Eller seems fair. Resign Grabo and you've got Backstrom (49.3%), Grabovski (54.1%) , Eller (52.9%), Latta (52.2%, although a small sample) down the middle. As Halpy said, Ward is one of the few guys we've got who seems to excel in the playoffs, which is why you won't find a lot of support for moving him. If it weren't for that, I and a lot of others would be with you on moving him given the situation.

Has Gordon learned how to stay upright for an entire shift?

Taking a hit to make a pass is a rarity in the me first modern era

I bet we will not see one cap player take a monster hit to make a pass the rest of the year.

The problem with Boyd was that he was doing it playing with scrubs that had no chance of finishing. But at least he didn't get injured doing it.

I'm not talking abou heroic sacrifice to make a pass. The guy had serious issues staying on his feet, particularly along the boards.

I don't remember him falling much but you may well be right. To compare, did he fall more than Semin? TOIs aside.

I more remember him getting absolutely demolished on passes to no one.

Not really sure i want to have Gordon back because Edmonton signed him to that ridiculous contract. On a top-20 team he is still just a very good 4C being paid ~3m per year.

Would much rather see Latta back as 4C or maybe someone like Konopka who is very good on FO's, tough and he will be cheap.

Yes he went down way, way more than Semin. I don't even think of Semin as weak on his skates because he was so agile. I don't really recall seeing him fall in ways that made me think there was a problem with that.

Gordon, however, was guaranteed to go down several times a game if anyone breathed on him. I don't think that's confirmation bias talking so maybe someone else can confirm.

Very early, Semin used to fall a lot, but he mostly grew out of it. It's probably a little bit of confirmation bias in Gordon's case, but the guy really did go down a ton. I think he also led the league in hits taken to hits given. I still like him though.

I liked that he gave his all and don't wish him any specific harm.
