Not particularly appealing. You save 3M, but you'll still need a D man to replace Orpik. Can you find a UFA D for 3M that's going to be much better than Orpik? And then you worsen the cap situation for two more years.
Even if we're considering that route, I think a much better option would be to try to find a taker for 50% retained. You'll save pretty much the same money, and you won't be on the hook for extra buyout years. And Orpik at 50% should be a positive asset, IMO.

Just a reminder that we lost Semin and Green for free. That alone should tell what is Leonsis' approach when it comes to trading superstars.
Leonsis doesn't make those calls. Semin was an enigma we couldn't quite figure out because his offense lagged at the same time everyone else's did (including Ovi). If his contract year coincided with a bad year for us, we would have traded him. But we thought we could contend, so we kept him.
Same with Mike Green. We liked our chances that year, and Green was solid as a 3rd-pair guy and PP specialist. Giving him up at the deadline would have hurt us.
It takes hindsight to see those two moves as bad. Both guys were snatched up eagerly and paid big by other clubs, so they were perceived as strong assets, both in years where we were trying to win a Cup.
It's easy to question those calls after the fact.

Obviously you take a trade on Orpik if you can find one that doesn't cost the Caps much, but you buy him out if you don't find it. Hell, they can run with Chorney or another cheap 6/7 for most of the year, and patch the hole at the deadline if they have to. But the $5.5M anchor has to go.

Green should have ben gone after the 2008-2009 season. As soon as it was clear his game dropped off as soon as he was banged up.
It just takes vision and balls. Two things GMGM did not have.
It doesn't take hindsight. Many of us were calling for Semin (and Green later) to be moved back when they had some remaining value. Atrocious asset management doesn't take a crystal ball to reveal itself.
he was a first team all star in 2009-2010...
Orpik was better this regular season, but he was a liability in the postseason. Won't surprise me if he's back, but he shouldn't be.
The buyout isn't all that punishing at this point. But it's likely a wash move financially because he has to be replaced unless we roll Chorney or Bowey in the bottom pair.
Salary cap : 73M$
Cap hit : 72,867,628M$
22 players. For the last (22nd) place. Choose between Sill, Barber or Ness.
Orpik traded with pick(s) for pick
Oshie 6Mx5
Jdub 2.5Mx1
Kuzya 5.5Mx5
Bura 2Mx2
Schmidt 2Mx2
Orlov 4.5Mx2
Hainsey 2Mx2
Stephenson and Copley 750Kx2 both
bring Vrana, Stephenson and Bowey as permanent guys
I think the team would benefit more if you changed the wingers of your 2nd and 3rd lines, because neither Ovie or Willy are that good at creating their own chances.

that's just playing into the "contender year after year to fill seats" narrative. why sell a useful/impact player if you're going for it?Yes, and it was the first sign that his game dropped way off as soon as he was banned up. There was no way he could hold up for a 20+ game playoff run.
Like I said balls and vision. To sell high on a player that was not going to be able to get it done in the long run.
https://tedstake.monumentalsportsnetwork.com/2017/05/12/this-loss-hurtsHas Ted made any kind of statement yet?
So no rebuild, no real reflection due to pressure to provide to the fans and probably losing Carlson after next year for nothing. Rinse repeat. Our team definitely will look different next year due to expiring contracts and salary cap limits. At this point I don’t know what the team makeup will be, but our goal is to retain and acquire players who will help us to advance in the playoffs and win a championship in 2018.
