Guys, half the people on social media are calling this a clean hit.
I'm curious of what people on HF think.
Imo, you can't give a guy a headshot while coming from the side, where he can't even see you.
I love violent, hard hockey, but I don't like cheap and dirty hockey.
If you want to ring someone's bells, face him and hit him hard into the chest, or shoulder to shoulder, but not this.
Just a hockey player and fan's opinion.
What do y'all think?

Just look at 1:24-1:27 of the video. Abdelkader clearly leaves his feet and hits the head first. Dirty hit.

Not clean, dumb hit. Funny he just got over one suspension I bet money he's getting another one for that hit.

"Clean hit" :D Who the hell says this? Don Cherry and his minions? Keep your head up boy, this is hockey!!!!

Disgusting hit. Exactly what NHL and every single ice-hockey league on this planet is trying to get rid of. Six games for Abdelkader.

Wow glad to see responses like these.

I think those who really need to get their bells rung with a hit like that are those claiming it IS a clean hit, maybe it'd set their brains straight.

Or maybe they have been hit like this too often.

I mean seriously, that is one bad hit these days.

Contact to the head, blindside, left his feet... Dirty, ugly and just bad. Cost his team the game and hopefully cost himself any further national team assignments.

Always disgusts me why a player would deliver such a dirty hit to a fellow player. Just a guy earning a paycheck, playing the game. No need to go all 18 wheeler on him.

Disgusting hit. Shows no respect for the opponent. Not surprising coming from the ******* Abdelkader. Giving that guy the C was a blindingly stupid act.

The only thing dirty about this hit is the stupid ****ing angle. Professional broadcasters should be able to ****ing find the live angle shot of it and clearly see it was a clean it.

Oh man, hope Sobotka recovers well. At least they can use the video to show what you shouldn't do. There is literally every single wrong you can do in it.

It doesn't seem clean from that angle either...

It's a late hit, targeting the head and he clearly leaves his feet.

Late? Are you kidding?

You can see that he is like 5 feet away while Sobotka is releasing the shot.

Then as far as leaving his feet, you can clearly see their legs colliding and his left skate is like 2 inches off the ice.

Makes contact with the head didn't see anything malicious about was a headshot so deserves the 5 and game. Didn't leave feet till after contact people open your eyes.

Abdelkader comes from (more or less) behind, there was no way Sobotka could see him. IMO this isn't a "keep your head up" situation.

Besides that, Abdelkader comes late. I understand that he had good speed and a collision would have been hard to avoid but he elevated, the way he crashed into Sobotka, falling forward without contact to the ice, I would estimate it to be a jumping movement.

I just want to quote the IIHF rulebook.

) A player who runs, jumps or charges an opponent or who runs, jumps or charges the
opposing goalkeeper in his crease shall be assessed, at the discretion of the Referee, a:
X Minor penalty (2’)
or
X Major penalty+ Automatic Game Misconduct penalty (5’+GM)
or
X Match penalty (MP)
b) A player who injures his opponent as a result of charging shall be assessed, at the
discretion of the Referee, a:
X Major penalty + Automatic Game Misconduct penalty (5’+GM)
or
X Match penalty (MP)

In my opinion it's a reasonable call.

Edit: Charging was the call made by the official.

As a die hard wings fan, this hit disturbs me.

Because hes doing the hit with 1 intention, to hurt the guy.

changes his trajectory, launches upwards, and nails a guy in the head with his arms/hands.

He had 1 purpose in that hit. And it wasn't to separate the guy from the puck. He COULD have do that. A beautiful shoulder to shoulder check would have been just as devastating. But Clean.

Are you ****ing kidding me? Sobotka is doing a no look shot while looking in Abdelkaders direction and then as soon as he releases he looks at the shot and doesn't protect himself.
