Disturbing that some people think this is a clean hit. It is that simple. In my mind a hit is something you deliver to get the puck(after all the puck is what you score the goals with) not to punish people in a vulnerable position. The players should show some respect for their opponents

Contrary to what you may think, game speed decisions need to allow for hits to happen after the player being hit releases the puck, otherwise anytime someone sees a hit coming, they'd release the puck and it would be a penalty.

This wasn't too late to be egregious. The hit was in motion prior to the shot.

I don't know guys. Wasn't there a contact with the head? I think it's relatively clear that there was. And in that case, in the NHL, it should be even a suspension.

In the IIHF it's a penalty to make head contact, in the NHL it's not supposed to be unless it's egregious. In the NHL this wouldn't, or shouldn't be a penalty. It's what is, and should be considered a beautiful hit.

Sobotka had to have seen him for a good 3-4 seconds atleast, he should brace himself. That said, the onus has to be on the hitter. No need to go for the head.

I get why it is being said in the general concept, but it is amusing considering the player it was delivered on here.

Yes players seem to have less respect these days, Sobotka as someone who used to see him in division isn't exactly the shining example of a guy that wouldn't take advantage of someone putting themselves in a bad spot either.

It is what it is, it is dirty in that it isn't necessary. But for those saying the NHL will ring that up, we would see, if I am Babcock I tell him to make that hit come post-season in the NHL, my opinion is he gets nothing, except maybe an *** kicking from the other team. Nash on Kopecky is a pretty big example here and this hit isn't even close to that bad or with that amount of elbow to head contact.

I don't think he has to concern himself with IIHF rules for a while, hard to see how a player of Abdelkader's caliber gets placed on a roster just to burn off international suspension games.

I don't agree with the call. I think it's a legal hit.

Head is not targeted.
Full body contact.
Did not leave his feet prior to contact.

But then the IIHF probably have different rules than the NHL. The hit is clean though.

Except he should know better than that. International hockey is played incredibly close by the officials.

Agreed. I was responding to a poster talking about a hit contacting the head not being legal in the NHL. It is under certain conditions.

If you watch the gif, the head is the only part that takes contact first, and that's why I think it would be illegal in NHL, too.

I don't think you can tell anything that detailed from a gif. It very well may have been deemed illegal in the NHL, in great part because of Abdelkader's long run up to the hit, and the resulting injury.

I don't think it was meant to be a dirty hit as such. Just a hit that would seriously cream the other player. Also dangerous, one of these days a player is going to get killed in that type of situation.

Body checking is an important part of the game but I think players need to respect each other more than they do. That's why I believe fighting is a legitimate part of hockey. When players can hit with that kind of impunity it easy to cross the line. When you have a guy sitting on the bench to look after those kinds of things maybe he thinks twice.

I don't really think hits like that are good for the game of hockey either. Ask yourself if you want your kids to play this game. The people playing it have a reasonable right and expectation to play the game without being killed.
