One problem is that no one on the team seems capable at this point of being a first-pair defenceman. Wolanin's decline in the last two years is substantial. Brisebois isn't back to pre-concussion level.

Mueller deflects a shot by Stevens for his first AHL goal. 5-3.

I am high on Kudryavtsev. He had a brainfart tonight but he has more upside than people give him credit for.
Same. Towards the end of that period he made a nice little play at the O blueline to walk around a forward and move in for a shot on net. The shot was a muffin in the crest but he showed some good mobility. I think he's a good prospect that has made the jump to the pros rather smoothly.

2nd paring?
I think he can do it. He doesn't have any "wow" ability but he's just solid and I think he can be a minute muncher type defenseman. Just a good defensive prospect, good gap control, ability to make the first pass, also has some nice plays on the offensive blueline.

Everyone talks about Pettersson but I think so far Kudryavtsev has outplayed him through pre-season into this season. Although, I admit I haven't been watching all the AHL games. I did get to catch them both in person when they played the Kraken in preseason.

EDIT: That isn't a knock on Pettersson at all. They are both doing well in the AHL.

Tocchet isn't the type of guy to blow smoke about any hockey player. So when he singles out Kudryavtsev and Mynio for high praise during training camp and the exhibition schedule, you can't just dismiss it.

By the season's end in Abbotsford, it's possible that D-Petey, Mynio, Kudryavtsev and Wilander are all in the AHL Canucks lineup. I doubt that Malhotra would play them all at the same time.....but it would be something to see.

The best looking crop of prospect d-men for the Canucks in a long, long time.

:dunno:

Tolopilo didn't have a great night that's for sure. Hard to blame him after the 4th since he was probably mentally checked out after the 3rd goal and was pulled after the 4th and only returned because Patera was injured.

If your goaltender gives up 7 and only saves 18 shots you are in trouble for the night.
