Series Talk: [A1] Toronto Maple Leafs vs [WC1] Ottawa Senators | Part II (TOR lead 3-0)

Marner might force management's hand on changes to the core, but I doubt any major changes are done there. Less money for JT, more for Mitch.

Though that too might depend on Shanahan's employment status.
Marner is also a pending UFA a change involving him might happen regardless of the series/playoffs.

Probably just resting him up, seemed fine the entire game
Yeah well, Joseph Woll also played to the end in game 6 last year. We all know what happened.

Stolarz has played like a game every 4-5 days in the last few weeks. Why the f*** would he need the rest?

Obviously the Leafs have a pretty damn good alternative in Woll, but I would be slightly alarmed by this.

Why do you think we have 2 time Stanley cup winning Matt Murray?

you learn pretty early in contact hockey that when you skate towards a player after the whistle, they are probably get their hands up to defend themselves. There’s one reason Domi skated that direction it’s to get a shot in on Kleven. Domi got popped wanted none of that and went for a player already engaged with another.

Yeah, that's not how it happened.

Watch the replay. Or at least try to watch it this time without wearing your Alfredsson jersey and Sens cap.

Oh we know how this goes. We know very very well how this goes.

But down 4-1 going into the 3rd period, even after making it 4-2 your team didn’t do what the 2013 bruins did.

And your goaltender doesn’t look like 2021 Carey price, either.

So let’s see what else your team has in their back pocket. I don’t think they have very much, personally
As a nucks fan who desperately wants Marner out west I didn't want to root for you guys, despite being a fan of the team.

That being said sens and Habs fans talking shit about the leafs is rather hilarious.
Both teams especially the Habs caught lightning in a bottle and benefited from a conference that honestly sucks apart from five maybe six teams.

People shit on the leafs and while granted they haven't been as good in the playoffs as they hoped, aside from the asterisk covid season they have played extremely good teams in round one almost exclusively.
They are a perennial playoff team that have taken the top teams to game seven almost every year with what was a young core with flawed goaltending and defense under dubas.

They now have an easy first round opponent a solid Dcorp, good goaltending and a coach and system that suits the style of playoff hockey.

As a nucks fan I see a lot of similarities in the way the rest of Canadian markets relish seeing the leafs fail and I think it comes down to the fact our two markets happen to be the only Canadian cities that have no issues attracting and keeping top players, while also being the two cities that are actually desirable. TBF Montreal is an awesome city but for some reason isn't considered a top choice for UFA's.

Should be a good series, guys. There'll be a ton of chicks. Let's just go have fun and let go a little.

You think chicks dig it?

Speaking of which, I was out for supper Friday when this 30 something young lady assured the bartender that the Sens were taking this in 4 games. She had apparently been watching the team since its inception, and that there was no way TO would get the upper hand. It was good.

Was just able to watch the game and surprised how weak Toronto looked

Expected them to come out of the gate like hell
No leaf fan expected them to come out of the gate like hell. Many of us expected Ottawa to do that and we’d be down a goal or two early.

That’s okay, we weren’t all that surprised about how weak the bruins looked this year. I thought they’d crash and burn last year though. Which eventually, they did

Matthews got straight up and maintained possession. He didn't even look at the refs. He wasn't trying to get a call.

I could at least understand if they were just mad the refs called a tighter game (which they made clear early). Calling that play a dive is crybaby cope on a different level. Matthews isn't a diver, wasnt diving on that play and the Toronto fanbase generally wishes the Leafs would embelish a little more to get calls.

I mean, if Tavares pulls a classless move like staying down after the crosscheck, we all know it's 5 and a game....but Tavares isn't a classless chump like DeBrusk and Greig...and Matthews isn't a diver like Stutzle, the most notorious diver of recent times (so you figure Sens fans would know the difference).

As a Leaf fan, the only questionable call last night was on Timmy Stutzle. That can't be a call in the playoffs IMO.

It came at a way too pivotal moment in the game, and in all honesty changed the complexation of the game most likely. If the shoe was on the other foot, which it often times is, I would be equally unhappy. As for the other calls, they are for sure penalties IMO.

Regardless, I still feel like the Leafs were the better team start to finish. SOG totals mean nothing to me if the shots are coming from non threatening areas of the ice. Of course, Stoly was called on to make a big save multiple times, and he answered the bell. But lets not overlook the fortunate bounce over his paddle that got OTT back into the game in the first place. Big saves and big blunder kinda even out in the wash as far as I am concerned.

That said, I know Ottawa has more in them. I don't think the score last night is an accurate representation of this series, and even that game. If the Leafs want to walk away with their chests puffed out and cocks hanging lower, they will soon be smacked in their teeth.

Ottawa will be better, and we will need to match it. Plain and simple

From a neutral fan's perspective:

1. Leafs were the better team overall
2. Refs called stuff that almost never gets called in the playoffs
2. Although Leafs probably still would have won, if Ottawa had an NHL caliber goalie in net it would have likely been a 1 goal game down to the last few minutes

I concur with all of this. What I'll add is that in addition to the refs calling stuff that almost never gets called in the playoffs, while they were technically penalties, the players getting fouled were pretty well selling the calls. From my neutral point of view, I probably wouldn't have thought much of it if one or two of them had resulted in embellishment also being called. Just kind of a strangely officiated game. It would be like if the police in an area suddenly started issuing a bunch of speeding tickets to people going 3-5mph over the speed limit I guess.
