Come on, none of that is in the NHL The NHL All Washout Team is littered with guys that were gold medalists for their National team or won a Calder cup. I think the Leafs famously traded away Rask because they had the goalie that won Canada the gold medal in Juniors and he was gone a year or two later.

I’ll wait to anoint Ned the next Cam Ward when we see him produce over a larger stretch.

You can still call Ned a successful draft pick, though, at least up to this point. Compared to the goalie prospects we were used to getting "excited" for, it's a huge leap in the right direction.

Yup, they chose Justin Pogge over Rask. He actually had a short stint in our organization years later.

If by “we” you mean the same people penciling in Ned for a cup at this point, yes.

Did you miss the part where I said successful "so far in his career"? Surely you don't disagree with that? I mean, he's got more than just team accomplishments; he's been goalie of the year in each of his last two leagues. And his NHL start has been promising, no?

Now, I'll agree with you that none of that is a guarantee of long term success at the NHL level and that Ned still has a bunch to prove. But at least he is still on track. Until he gets bucked off (which most have by this point) he has a chance to finish his ride.

And maybe I missed it, but I haven't seen anyone on here projecting Ned as our long term franchise goalie or penciling him in for a Cup just yet. The vibe I'm getting is fans ready to give Ned a 1b or backup spot for the rest of this year and next, with a chance of him developing into something more.

Wait wait wait, I dont see a lot of that here. What I see is a lot of people more along my line of thought which is Ned has been better than Riems and he should get the bulk of the load till Petr is back. Once Petr is back I dont envy the Borgs plight. Do you sit Riems on the taxi squad only giving him spot starts ( which is what I would do)? Do you send the guy playing better to the taxi squad? Hope not.

I like Riems and what he has done the last 2 years but his time is up here and you need Ned getting more starts for experience purposes only let alone because he has been the better of the 2.

Also I'm not planning on letting both Petr and James leave next year without a clear upgrade at the #1 spot because i dont know if Ned is ready for that.

When Petr is back you just carry 3 Gs on the roster for the rest of the season. Colorado would be all over any of our 3 that we might waive to go to the Taxi squad in a f***ing second and last thing we need is Bibeau or Warm (... well maybe on him) as the backup option in case of injury.

They’ve pretty much said that is the plan going forward.

Can also send Bibeau and Warm back down at that point, as you only need a total of 3 goalies between the active roster and taxi squad. They can bring in another skater for the taxi squad if they want.

If by “we” you mean the same people penciling in Ned for a cup at this point, yes.

I think I am the only one who mentioned Ned and the cup. And I said "if" the Canes win a cup in the next 4 years I expect Ned to be the goalie in the playoffs.

Two reasons:

1) I do think Ned, based on history and his much too small sample size, will be the best goalie in the organization for the next 3 1/2 seasons.

2) I have pointed out before that the relationship between winning a cup and developing the cup-winning goalie internally is starting to look like more than mere coincidence.
I think it has a lot to do with the two-way commitment between goalie and organization. ALL goalies go through down stretches at every level. Knowing that an organization has and will support you has to help during those times. There are so many examples of goalies who have the talent (Bob, Holtby recently) losing confidence. There are also examples of goalies whose confidence seems to allow them to out-perform their talent at key moments (Binnington, maybe Murray recently). My point is that for all we talk about size, athleticism, and mechanics, there seems to be an equally important factor related to confidence. Based on the last 15 cup winners, goalies benefit from the organization either turning to them (Ward, Binnington, Murray) in the most important situation or sticking with them (look at Quick in who was statistically pedestrian in 09-10 but the organization never wavered and was rewarded with two cups).

Ned knowing he is the Canes' guy could turn out well.
