A SERIOUS DEBATE: Acquiring Sekera, what will it take?

Too much.

Not worth the cost imho. Kings can't afford to re-sign him in the offseason most likely.

IF salary can be moved (Voynov, Richards) I'd say send assets to Arizona for Yandle at the draft.

As is tho, too much up in the air with salary issues.

Most and I mean most all things considered at this point (including not knowing about Voynov) is a 2nd in 16 and Weal. We just won't be able to match/better offers this time around for some players (which I think is a good thing) due partly to not knowing what is going to happen with Voynov and partly because the prices are going to be prohibitively restrictive.

2nd Weal is right on the money.

Concur, a 2nd round pick and Weal is what should be offered. If another team outbids the Kings, so be it.

This. Sekera seems to be the most hyped D-man available, especially with Franson gone.

I'd love to get Yandle, but I'd imagine a trade of any real substance between LA and PHX may be harder to see done. I also wonder if there's any lasting bad blood between Yotes/Kings or Yandle/Kings after the 2012 semi's.

Sekera is really good. He is a skating d man that actually knows how to play a solid positional game and can contribute offensively. He asked for 5.5-6m and management said no. Chara went as far to say that he is the most underrated d man in the NHL.

Well there is no way the Kings can afford that asking price so he'd be a straight rental and Lombardi avoids those. Move along nothing to see here.

I agree. But also, playing for a team that has a winning culture and a chance to win a cup can be attractive and sometimes player will sign for less. Either way, the last time the Canes were in this situation they landed a player named Justin Williams. So I am excited.

Let me guess, a Canes and/or Buffalo and/or Sekera fan huh?

Management should say no to that. And I don't care what Chara says, most NHL players stand up for each other especially when they are looking at a potential huge pay day. Sekera gets a big cheque, everyone else next cheque gets a bit bigger. Welcome to the NHLPA.

Sekera is a fine D-man, would be a solid add to our 2nd pairing. But if the cost is what has been reported, such as a 1st plus something good, then pass. He's a rental, I never seen the value in trading a 1st for a rental.

What if that rental brings in a cup? Is it worth the 1st then?

That's not a valid argument and you know it.

Why not? The Canes gave up a first one year for Doug Weight at the dead line and they ended up winning a cup. I think it's a valid argument. But if I were GM I would not pull the trigger on a deal like this. However, we all know that solid top pairing d men are not cheap and not easy to come by.

Pass, the Kings won't have the cap space to extend him. There is no reason to give up any assets to acquire him.

I hate when people cherry pick results.

Yes, the Doug Weight deal helped for sure. So did the deal for Mark Recchi that year. That said, you know full well for each team that makes a big deal and goes on to win a cup there are 5-10 others who make a big deal and don't. Many fall well short. Ask St. Louis how well they did dealing two 1sts, Jaroslav Halak and a few other pieces for Ryan Miller and Steve Ott. How'd Nashville do back in 2006 when they gave a 1st for Brendan Witt? Dallas dealt a 1st for Ladislav Nagy. Nashville traded Scottie Upshall and Ryan parent (two recent first rounders and decent young prospects at the time) and a 1st and a 3rd for Forsberg. Not one of those made it out of the first round of the playoffs the year they made the deal.

The odds are far greater of the team trading a 1st for a rental not even getting past the first or second round than it is of them winning a cup.

Forsberg is going to help that team for years to come. I think that was a great trade.

Sekera is more the type of player the Kings need. He is definitely worth the cost especially if Voynov is as done as people seem to think.

Given our minor league chart right now I would be surprised if DL rents anything at all this year, outside of maybe picking up a depth guy. The cupboards need restocking. I don't see much possibility of Sekera re-signing in LA, the price is too much for the cap situation.

I think the Kings acquisitions this year will be Voynov, Pearson, or Richards (or any combination). Of course, if the Kings put together a long winning streak, things will probably change in DL's mind.

Can someone explain why you think it will be Weal? What's the deal with this guy? Past looking at his stats I have no idea what he brings to the table.
