A new low for Chris Cuthbert

Cuthbert has lost a few miles off his fastball, but he's generally been a great play by play guy over his career.

Same thing happened to hughson during his tenure as the main hnic pbp guy.... its as if they lose some of that enthusiasm in that gig, but being around the scene for over 30 years probably can't be ignored either.

cuthbert is mildly toronto-centric but he can credibly call the home games of all the canadian teams. he's probably the only active pbp guy who can do that. it's going to be ugly when he retires because the sportnet monopoly and death of radio has throttled pbp talent.

When you do the call for the same team week in and week out, I think its only natural to evolve in such a way that it makes you present through that team's lens, even if you have the best intentions.

It's unfortunate as a viewer because you lose that feel of a national broadcast.

I’ve always thought precisely the opposite. Hockey commentators need to acknowledge when a game is out of reach. Pretending there’s still a chance when there isn’t is condescending nonsense

I have never been a fan of Chris Cuthbert, the Sportsnet play by play. I have found him to be very bland amongst other issues.

But he hit a new low Monday night-with about 13 minutes left in the Canada-Finland game, he made it quite clear that a Canada-US final was a certitude, which his sidekick proclaimed as well (his mame escapes me).

I have played the game and faithfully followed the game for over 60 years-and I groaned at this claim, cursing him for saying it, knowing what could happen (and almost did). Where does he get off saying this? When was a play by play allowed this latitude?

Shame on him for such a total lack of professionalism, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Lucky for him, by a whisker Canada won, but he shouldn’t be allowed on. the air.

Statistically speaking, it was the safe call to make calling a 4-0 lead a certitude. The audience is primarily Canadian also.

Also, like he's doing the broadcast for CBC. Of a team Canada game. Like yeah, he thinks they're gonna win like everyone else in Canada.

This is a nothingburger.

Just to be accurate, CBC has not produced NHL hockey since 2014. They do air Saturday night games and playoffs games produced by Sportsnet for which Sportsnet earns all the ad revenue and CBC basically gets content and promo slots for other programming. And CBC is not airing any of the games from the 4 Nations Cup.

That being said, yes, he is calling a Team Canada game for a Canadian sports network.

Could not agree more. As the late great Bob Cole stated live on air during 2012 Stanley Cup final (when Glen Healy did what Cuthbert did) "no predictions from the booth" Bob commanded rather sternly.
Cuthbert is a hack as his counter part Craig Simpson.

Cuthbert has been the voice of many a great playoff game in NHL history. No one is Bob Cole, only Bob Cole is Bob Cole, but it isn't as if Cuthbert is a new kid on the block. Many legendary series have his voice all over it. He's been around a long time. Now, normally what happens is an announcer says things like "If Canada can hang onto this lead.................." or along those lines. Even if you the viewer know the game is over. And quite frankly, a 4-0 lead with Canada in the driver's seat in the 3rd period is about as safe as anything. But usually an announcer doesn't say anything because he doesn't want to turn into the guy who called the game and then was wrong. However, is this really a big deal?
