A new contender for worst broadcaster of all time (Leah Hextall)

There are so many awful PBP and color people, both nationally and regionally. Do they all have 1000+ post threads dedicated to them? Or is it something else about Leah...?
People don't say Doris Burke sucks, because she doesn't.

Leah Hextall has improved since the beginning of the season, still unpleasant when she does a game I intend on watching.

There’s other women in hockey broadcasts and most/all don’t get near this response. She’s genuinely bad. Still messes up player names, team names, associates players and teams with the wrong teams and cities etc a ton; In addition to her tiny squeaky voice sounding really awkward for hockey games, and her alternating between dead to passes to Devils’ RoeniCK AND HE SCOAAAAAARS!”

Ive gotten used to AJ Mleczko’s somewhat monotone delivery (or she’s improved it) and her voice isn’t as bad anyways (it’s not bad at all), I’d rather they swap roles. Hextall could be fine I’m just about any other broadcast role. Even color analyst would buy her a few extra seconds in the replay to read the name on the players back

It’s probably because she really is spectacularly bad but it’s also annoying to be forced to listen to her instead of your team’s normal announcers because of the ESPN+ crap.

I get it, there are other female broadcasters and people (most of them) do not think Leah sucks just because she is a woman.

I do think that Leah Hextall faces substantially more scrutiny than most NHL broadcasters because she is a woman. If Leah Hextall was a dude named Lee Hextall, I think most people would have just acknowledged the broadcaster was awful and moved on by now.

Whatever.

If Jack Edwards or Marc Moser got national jobs, the bitching would be incessant and warranted. I haven't listened to Hextall call a game since early in the season, but she was on her own tier of bad. It's legitimately distracting.

IDK about Moser. I'm not familiar enough with him.

I think Edwards is ridiculed, and rightfully so, for being an absolutely over-the-top homer. If you're not a Bruins fan, it's just unbearably awful. However, I remember him being a very good soccer announcer decades ago, who was well-liked and respected, and I assume that if he called a hockey game straight, he'd probably be pretty good at it.

The thing is, Leah Hextall was shoehorned into this role. So the comparisons and suggestions that the complaints are due to her gender or mostly unfounded (though I'm sure there are some troglodytes in this thread).

She doesn't have a decade of experience calling the game that started with junior B, and moved up through juniors, minors, etc before finally getting her big break.

She is the result of corporate pink washing. ESPN wanted to do something that looked progressive, so they hired her.

I'm all for real progressiveness when it comes to helping people who are disadvantaged, etc.

But pretending that Leah Hextall is a delicate flower who needs us to pretend she is great is ridiculous.
She is in a tremendous position of unearned privilege and pretending that her gender should protect her from criticism is a discredit to real feminism.

Yeah there is! She is much worse than even the worst pbp guys out there. There are high school pbp people who do a better job! If she was a guy who was this bad, she wouldn't even have gotten this far. No way any man would have gotten hired with this bad of skill at the job. Half the game she isn't even calling the action, and really only calls it continously when there is a shot taken on net. Then when she is calling the game, she is terrible at it. The voice isn't great to listen to as far pbp is concerned, but nothing she can do about that. She should have been much much much much better to get a shot at NHL pbp. There has to be better qualified women to call a game than her, because if not, that doesn't say much!

I’d rather someone learning to do their job than some of these arrogant homers in the American fan bases.

Name one on any level close to Edwards for example.
Jack Edwards calls a regional broadcast, not a national broadcast. Craig Simpson is horrible - completely biased. Watching a Stanley-Cup Playoff game and the guy's literally cheering for one team (like Pittsburgh, for example. Or Jim Hughson's "Geno with the puck"). It's a national broadcast of the Stanley Cup Playoffs - be objective. Ever listen to Joe Bowen? Yet Jack Edwards is a homer. Please.

Where did I say anything about a national vs regional broadcast? Nice job moving the goal posts. My point is not wrong and neither is yours

edit: I think we’re actually agreeing in the first place my bad.

My point is who cares if a local broadcast is biased? They all are. They're supposed to be. Like Joe Bowen. Do I whine about the San Jose broadcasts, for example? The issue isn't bias in local or regional broadcasts, it's in national broadcast. Like CBC and NBC. Especially in the playoffs.

Exactly. Some of the art of PBP is allowing the moment to tell itself. People's brains can only digest so much, so quickly. Anytime I speak with a young person who wants to try PBP, I tell them to slow down, be yourself, and if you're questioning whether to speak or not, usually the right answer is don't.
that’s what made vin scully the best sports commentator of all time. When The Catch happened, he just let the crowd’s screaming do all of the talking.

I'd be saying f*** Lee Hextall as well then. Not every complaint about a female should just be disregarded because female like you're suggesting. Personally, I don't give a shit if it's a man or woman talking if they suck.
I've spent over 700 hours now playing a game series where you can't even choose to play a male character. The assumed hatred because woman is so tiresome.

I don't have ESPN+ but I do watch highlights and holy moly, is there a way to mute the broadcasters on that service? If not there should be.

1. I didn't say any of the criticisms about her should be disregarded. She sucks.
2. That's cool about your video game.
3. I said, rather explicitly, that I understand that most people don't dislike her just because she's a woman. I understand most people dislike her because she sucks.
4. I'm not even talking about "hatred." Are you? Shit.

I just said I think she faces more scrutiny because she's a woman, and that if she were a man most people would say they dislike him and move on, and there probably wouldn't be a season-long thread devoted to him.
