Hey maybe this would be a good opportunity for all the transwomen out there, I'm sure there wouldn't be any criticism or snarky diversity remarks for a hire like that since the voice would 'match' and everything.

(not taking stand on anyone's competence here, but rather what people are conditioned to see/hear when they tune in)

I wouldn't have an issue with anyone doing PBP as long as they are knowledgeable and have voice that comes through clearly on television (for me that means a deeper voice).

It's not like there's a treasure trove of amazing women broadcasters that have been pushed aside by men. Equal opportunity is looking at all of the terrible announcers that are all male and saying, "why can't half of these be women?" They have a point. Fans like us are still suffering, but at least we're being tortured by a more diverse cast of characters.
Next up, the goddamn awful anthem singers that are 20 minutes away from dying of old age right on center ice. It's incredible how the anthem singers in the NHL can be so absolutely dreadful as a majority. If grandpa starts singing the anthem with a weak, trembling voice that has lost its tone 25 years ago, I can at least ask him to stop or leave the room.

Hey now, people of all ages can butcher an anthem.

Hell, I'd rather hear some baritone, operatic version of O Canada from a "grandpa" than some young aspiring starlet who stretches it to four minutes with unnecessary vocal exercises throughout the song.

If that's the case, grandpa should at least have the courtesy of wearing a bloody apron instead of a suit. And yes, I agree with you the "this is my SHOT!" singers singing like it's life or death aren't a choice either. How about just a good goddamn singer?

Personally, I'd be all for it as long as it was competent and sounded good.

Yes, and I expected that people would say this.

My point was more that, when a person 'looks like a woman' and then opens their mouth and 'sounds like a man', people tend to freak out. I feel like there's a similar thing happening here with people tuning into a hockey game and not hearing the type of voice they are used to. Is it some truth carved into stone that a male voice is simply the best in this type of activity, or is it just the case of conditioning and being used to things sounding certain way?

You can hear her in the Condensed Game highlights here.

You can tell she's intelligent in understanding the game and she pronounces every name correctly but agreed that her voice, the cadence and how she ties it all together just isn't good at all.

Some of it could be fixed with a better mix, sounds like it's mixed for a male voice. They need to cut some of the frequencies coming from the crowd noise to make more space for her. Right now it's only the nasal sounds that you pick up on and it makes her sound a bit like a mosquito.

Everyone has their preferences when it comes to equalizing their sound systems... but mine is more bass, less treble. This is probably why I prefer pbp voices that are on the lower end as well.

is it me or is the largest problem that she sounds about 0.5 - 1 second behind the play? if it was timed better and the audio mixed better, no worse than most PBPs

some broadcasts, the panthers? (trusting my memory here), seem almost in front of the play at times

Leah is an excellent host in between periods, probably one of the best out there that’s not a regular. Kind of miss her doing Flames intermissions.

With that said though, I 100% agree with the OP. I remember her doing the Knights-Flames pbp right before the shutdown on sportsnet and I just remember thinking how awful she was. Her voice really clashes with the broadcast and she goofed up with the play calls constantly. Not sure if she fixed that or not, but regardless, pbp is not for her.

She should be hosting ESPN intermissions instead because like I said, she’s awesome at it.

Not worth my time.
This isn’t a court of law lol

You got called out on your BS story about knowing her personally because you were too dense to use dates that make sense and know youre using the "not worth my time" when asked for clarification.

Leah is 41. Google it and see the first ten things that pop up that give her birthdate and age.

But I'm sure you're right. She must be 51. Because that would make your story more plausible.

Why did subconsciously it being female not help? Is there something inherently inferior about women’s voices? TIL

Because it sounds out of place in a sports league with 100 percent male players. That's not any more controversial of a view than saying a man's voice sounds out of place on "Say Yes to The Dress."

So you really want to keep saying that you're right and the entire rest of the internet is wrong, just because it makes you look better? Okay...

Hold on Lion67, let me mail you a birth certificate of her birth to prove your valid and certifiably strong point to question her age in the general. What a splendid timing to pick your battle. What an important question to sort out. What's your mailing adress again? Lions 67, Derail Street 1, 111 111 in DownTown, right?

I'm all for women empowerment but it has to be off merit and not because she is a woman, which is clearly not what ESPN did with Leah Haxtall because she is a disaster. I can't believe there's no thread on just her yet, that Kings-Stars OT was legit great and she ruined it. Would rather listen to Jack Edwards mispronounce Kulikov's name on a loop clockwork orange style than listen to that. How can you introduce a casual when that's the broadcast they'll be listening to? Also the audio was comically off (this is not her fault). Total peewee production.

Between this and the girl in NHL 22 in the drop in menu who you just cannot shut off, they're losing consumers here lol...
