Movies: A Minecraft Movie

I mean I like Jack Black and all but is he going to be in every video game movie going forward? Bowser, Claptrap, and now Steve, how long before he is in a Mega Man movie playing both Dr Light and Dr Wily?

I finally watched the trailer and the live action is a disappointment and a mistake, IMO. This should've been fully animated, like the LEGO movies and The Super Mario Bros Movie. It'll probably still be successful, but I think that they missed a chance to make the kind of money that the latter made and sequels may be doomed because they have to keep coming up with reasons for humans to visit the world and their reactions to it are liable to get old. I don't think that this was really thought through.

I'm sure it'll be passable enough for kids to like it, which is who this movie is for. I really don't understand why they wanted to make this a live action movie or needed A-list celebrities in it.

Given the obvious money-grab you'd think it would make more sense for them to not pay all those huge superstar contracts. Apparently the budget for the film is about $150 Million which is just absurd. It seems like every big movie is costing in the high 8 or even into 9-figures now.

Sounds like this sh*t is pretty ass. Will still probably gross $1B
In only its second day of release, its box office is going to blow past what Snow White has taken over two weeks to earn. I imagine Disney thinking to themselves, "Why are people turning out to see that mediocre movie when they didn't to see ours?"

Disney messed up by making a live action movie of one of their older cartoons. Kids today aren't watching Snow White and Cinderella era movies. If they're watching any non CGI movie, it's the Aladdin/Lion King/Beauty and the Beast era that their parents (people in their early 30s and older) watched when they were kids.

I went yesterday and acruelly enjoyed the movie. Definitely some corny spots with Jack Black and Mamoa… Most of the movie it didn’t feel like “Steve” was actually a character. It was just Jack Black. I thought Danielle Brookes’ performance was notably weaker than anyone else’s though.

Pretty true to the source material, a lot of fun Minecraft jokes and references. Didn’t care much for the music portions from Black. But overall it was a fun movie.

Jennifer Coolidge’s character was funny, but ultimately inconsequential to the movie lol.

wayyyyy better than I initially thought it would be.

Why do studios think that just because they're creating a cinematic event based on a popular IP in the form of some other media that that means they can write an absolutely dog shit story with awful, annoying acting, and just load it up with references to the IP so fans of the original product can say "OMG THEY SAID CHICKEN JOCKEY"?

Oh yeah, it's because people flock to the theater regardless and allow a product like this to churn in $1 billion at the box office.

If you contributed to this movie's success because you have kids who wanted to see this and took them, fine, but adults really shouldn't be excusing this slop.

The movie is purely for kids. Kids love Minecraft a lot. Can't blame any parent for taking their kid(s) to see this. It's not a cinematic masterpiece, but it'll bring plenty of joy to ton's of kids.

I mean, it’s not like this is blocking a Godfather-quality film.

This type of movie is like top 40 music. There’s always going to be a certain amount of crap on the list. It’s not meant to be fine cinema, no sense in taking it seriously or worrying about encouraging more. There WILL be more. If you have a soft spot for Minecraft, get high and go see it ironically with some buddies.
