Value of: A 2nd line center to Montreal.

Not sure any young top 6 centers are going to be available in futures deals. Be better off surfing the rental market or market of nearly 30 year olds and hope one sticks around after their contract is up and can fill the hole for 3-4 years while you draft or develop one.

Is Owen Beck not viewed as an NHL center?

He is but will likely be best suited as a 3rd line C. Hage looks promising to develop into a 2nd line C but is likely 1 year away from the NHL and 3 years away from being a top 6 forward.

Tavares be good UFA for Montreal to sign
He’s good but there are a lot of other options id go with first. He is going to get more than he’s worth and i see us regretting it before it’s over. However, if there is a chance he can be short term and coach dach, maybe?

Habs been looking for top 2 center since the days of Kirk Muller. Over 30 years and 5 different GMs, none of them could find one. Other than Suzuki. Many trades, Scott Gomez, Kirby Dach, Drouin, Tanguay, Newhook, Lang, Bonk. But none worked out. I don't imagine it's going to be easy.

If we can sign a Tavares, do it!

The good news is if the Habs trade for one it will likely be at the draft which is before free agency so there is time to pivot to a plan b/UFA C.

To be realist no team will give a 2C for a guy like Beck or Mailloux. To bring a 2C they will have to overpay him if it's a UFA or Overpaid in a trade. Look how Colorado buy Nelson. The Price is very high but when you got needs sometimes it will be acceptable to overpay a little bit because the status quo is not an option

Renaud Lavoie said Duchene wasn't really considered by NHL brass.

I don't understand why, if interested he'd certainly be a perfect stop gap solution.

He's too old to ask for a long contract and he's been paid cheap (3 mil) the last 2 years.

If I was HuGo, I'd offer him big bucks on a 2-3 years contract.

To get someone who isnt an overpaid 30+ UFA signing, ....you either nerd to

1. Draft one and wait for them t the develop
Or
2. Significantly overpay for one

26 yr old Mittlestadt ( byram), zellers. 2nd for a 33 yr old Coyle and a 5th.

Not going to happen but interest in Sid and give up 2 firsts and Pens 2nd for Sid. Pens need their 2nd back for offer sheet. Sid may have interest in Habs to finish his career. The issue is AV's don't have enough for a fit for Pens and it takes a 3 way trade to give Pens higher end prospect talent. Habs may be the best that Sid would consider.

Tavares is too slow to play the uptempo style that the Canadiens utilize.

I would much prefer Matt Duchene if I were looking to add a veteran stop-gap to the top six.

Imagine Tavares on the same line as Laine. They might as well be skating backwards.

And I agree Duchene on a 2yr deal makes too much sense. Unless Hughes is planning on giving another Dach/Newhook type a chance. Galaxy braining it as the kids say.

Come on man you're a typical HFboarder, trigger happy when it comes to insulting but not very good at analysing.

Renaud Lavoie is dumb, but when it comes to having informations about the Habs, he's well informed.

Nothing is black or white in life... Lavoie can be a poor sport journalist, but still have some qualities...

I can't see it happening, but an under the radar move that I wish Hughes could pull is Anton Lundell. Young lefty C signed 5 more years at $5m.
Three things never get moved in the NHL

1. Young center’s aged 22-28 in their prime (even if they are 2 c it just doesn’t happen). These guys never get moved.
2. Number 1 d-man in their prime.
3. Young power forward.

You basically gotta draft them, sign an older one in free agency or find one that struggled so you can buy low.

Oh I know. Unless your playing NHL 25 it ain't happening. Panthers would need to extend Bennett and need extras somewhere else to entertain this a bit. One can dream 😅

Realistically, if the Habs want a 2nd line centre in their early to mid 20’s it has to start with minimum Hage or Reinbacher. Which Montreal fans won’t like

I'm okay with Hage if the player is 27 or younger starting next year (I might be willing to make an exception for Horvat, but I really like him).

Reinbacher is a no go for me though.

Maybe not ideal but I can see Islanders trying to trade Pageau at the draft. 1 year left on his deal a great #3 center. Probably could be had for a 2nd rounder(although if Possible I would like a 2026 one since we traded that to Chicago for taking Bailey's contract). I notice Montreal has two 2nd rounders both this year and next

I am guessing if Montreal is out of it at the deadline next year they can recuperate that pick + some, especially if they eat half his salary
