Isn't Eyessimont going to be out for a bit?Geekie and Groshev should be 1st call ups, but unless both Glendening and Ace are going to miss multiple games, I doubt either is on the opening day roster. I wouldn't be surprised to see at least one of them playing with the team at some point this seaaon.
Based on most reports, it sounds like he'll only be out around a week or so. Glendening will likely be ready by game 1 or very shortly thereafter.Isn't Eyessimont going to be out for a bit?
Stamkos's rookie season was under very different circumstances. If Geekie makes the team, it's probably going to be on a lower line. Point first made the team as a winger on the third line and scored 18 goals. Stamkos started on our fourth line. I remember he broke our rookie goal scoring record off an assist by fourth liner Zenon Konopka (who actually made a great play). Kucherov also played on our third line as a rookie, same with Palat, TJ and Killorn. Cooper seems to want to see his rookies, even our prized ones, earn their scoring time and prove they can play the defensive side first.
Our hole at 2RW would be the only reason I see him breaking that pattern, but I think for opening night and at least a while after that, Cooper will try a vet like Atkinson until they prove they prove beyond a doubt they can't do it.
Geekie shows a lot of promise, but he still might not be ready to be our 2nd line savior. I remember Kucherov scored a pretty goal every preseason game he played his rookie year, but struggled to finish in the regular season games, scoring only 9 in 52 games. He frequently got breakaways that year, but just couldn't finish.
I'd like to see Geekie dominate in Syracuse for maybe 20-30 games, and then bring him up. That's what they did with Kuch - he started on Syracuse and scored 13 goals in 17 goals and was promptly brought up.
If memory serves, Point made the team that way, but everyone got injured that year and he wound up centering the top line, which gave him a chance to shine. We made a late push and nearly made the playoffs despite half the team being down.If Geekie makes the team, it's probably going to be on a lower line. I don't remember if Point played the whole year on wing, but I remember him playing a good part of the season there, and he was effective - he demonstrated his ability to create chances even being on the third. If memory serves, Point made the team that way, but everyone got injured that year and he wound up centering the top line, which gave him a chance to shine. He may not have the ceiling of Point, but I agree with treating him as our best forward project since Point. It's him and Howard, pretty much, as the crown jewels. I was hoping to see more out of Gauthier last night, but he wasn't much of a factor that I saw.Geekie is our first major forward project since... Cirelli, depending on how you view him? Maybe Point. So it's tough to say if there have been any changes in the philosophy. We aren't nearly so log jammed as we were in those years.
