So it's the preseason and all, but already it's become abundantly clear that this improved defense...isn't.

I think the improvements to the defense have been vastly overstated, but they've only played half the NHL D in each game and they are giving tons of ice time to borderline NHL forwards who are pretty much lost defensively, most of whom won't be on the team. Not to mention Jeff Skinner.

Well let me know when it becomes abundantly clear from watching preseason games who's going to win the Stanley Cup, since 2 preseason games are apparently more than enough to decide whether a defense is improved or not. I have some extra money I want to put down on an early season Stanley Cup bet, so surely you can help me decide which team to bet on...

it was hard to tell watching the stream but it seemed that Khudobin didn't have much of a chance on those tonight. he appeared to be playing aggressively.

Gerbe looks good and Sekera looked steady and calm out there to me.

Hainsey seemed fine to me during the parts I watched.

the Checkers played like the Checkers though Jared was alright.

I haven't followed the rest of the league as much as I normally do, so I couldn't tell you. But if I were a betting man, San Jose. They're overdue.

But as for our defense, come on. Even if the preseason means very little (which I'm not saying it doesn't), the mistakes being made in the preseason aren't from the call ups or the rookies. The worst pairing against Columbus was Gleason-Komi. Tonight, Hainsey got abused. That's, at the least, concerning. It's rust now...until it's not.

But if it takes 20 games where the points matter to reach the same conclusion, so be it.

Gerbe, terry, and jared stood out from what I could watch. Hainsey stood out in a bad way. Skinner was ineffective. Jstaal and tlusty had moments. Faulk looked good, Murphy wasn't very smooth. Dalpe was invisible, boychuk had some good moments but was also quiet at times. This first three looked like they wanted it the most. Dvorak played solid.

I'm not sure what some are expecting when we have guys trying to play all over the place as far as depth, minutes, and roles go.

I just hope the coaching staff is learning what they need to know from it all.

Every year we get crushed in the pre-season, and everybody says "Well, it's just the pre-season, it doesn't mean anything." Then we get crushed in the regular season.

By contrast, the same thing happens with the Carolina Panthers.

IDK how other franchise's pre-seasons correlate to their regular season success, but it seems to here.

Detroit Lions: 4-0 preseason champions 2008 baby!

0-16 regular season.

Preseason is meaningless as a predictor. Remember Eric Staal's rookie year? He had something like 8 points in the preseason.

They've only had a losing record in one of the last five preseasons (and I'm counting OT losses as losses). Last year they didn't play a preseason.

Also, in the last couple of preseasons they've been excellent defensively - 14 goals and 13 goals against in 6 games. We all know how that went in the regular season.

The Lions went 4-0 in the preseason the year they went 0-16 in the regular season. Preseason is often entirely uncorrelated to actual performance. Not always, but often.

Yeah, the whale was often one of the best teams in the league in preseason. I can still remember Dan Patrick smirking whenever they would make light of it.
