Sucks to say but I don’t think there is any way Crosby comes close to playing 500 regular season games before he calls it quits.

So, I'm super bored at work and looked up these numbers to compare Sid to other long tenured players that rank high in scoring historically.

All of these numbers are simply taking their Age 37 and Over years ( I didnt do any crazy birthday math, I took seasons where they were 37 or older on Jan 31 of that season like hockey reference gave me) and look at only their GP and Total Points. For the purpose of this, I'll take Sid's projected totals for this year to give him credit for his full 36-year old year.

Rounding out his year with his projected totals, that leaves Crosby at 1272 Games played with 1589 Total Points; 332 points behind Jagr for #2 all-time, 333 to pass. Of the 12 players I quickly looked at and calculated, 2 make it or tie, and 3 players within 11 points of making it. Only 2 played more than 500 games after their 36-year old year.

In no order or anything;

Joe Thornton GP: 347 TP: 198
Gordie Howe GP: 508 TP: 489 (and hundreds more of each in the WHA)
Mark Messier GP: 585 TP: 324
Joe Sakic GP: 141 TP:152
Ron Francis GP: 335 TP: 239
Wayne Gretzky GP: 152 TP: 152
Jaromir Jagr GP: 460 TP: 322
Mark Recchi GP: 479 TP: 332 (Makes it on the nose in a tie)

It's possible that if Sid stays healthy and even close to as consistent as he has been and has the drive that he COULD do it, but also extremely unlikely. Would love to see it, though.

It's really odd seeing his stat line with more goals than assists. Bodes well if he remains healthy. The assists will start coming. Feels like the Penguin team is starting to gel a bit now and rolling.

He continues to re-invent his game at both ends of the ice and is a real difference maker.

He's currently on pace for 49 goals. If he does indeed hit the 40 goal mark, it would only be the third time he's done so (previous highs - 51 and 44 goals).

Either way he should pass Big Phil either late this year or early next year and crack the top 10 and that makes Sakic next in Crosby's sights and with Ovi currently 130 points behind Sakic, Burnaby Joe might hang onto 10th spot until McDavid passes him.

Crosby is currently in 6th place all-time. It's possible that he could become the all-time leader in this category - he's 222 points away.

* Sakic's results are for the Avalanche and Nordiques combined. Two different cities, but it's only one franchise.

His last and only 50 goal season was 15 seasons ago..

*would brake Ovies record as the oldest 50 goal scorer,

Connor McDavid might (probably will) become the 3rd best player ever
but he still 650 career points behind Crosby, lots can happen in 5 to 6 years

At ES he's 2nd in goals, 4th in points in the league this season. Over the last 2 seasons he's 7 points behind McDavid. The poor powerplay is really hurting any chance of awards, because he's part of the problem

If he manages to do that, his longevity and consistency of playing at such an high level will be on par with Gordie Howe
 
I think Crosby should be in the Hart conversation, but halfway through the year, the race for the trophy seems to be very competitive.

Also, he'd likely have to finish Top 10 in points or Top 3 in goals to win. It's very rare for a forward to win without one of those.

Crosby is having a great season and likely gets some hart votes, especially if Pens makes playoffs (I think they will).

But being top 10 in scoring and top 3 in goals definitely isn't enough to win the hart. Probably not even enough to finish top 5 this season.

Give Crosby today 3 more goals and 9 more points and that makes him top 10 in points and top 3 in goals. And in that case, he's definitely still behind all of Kucherov, MacKinnon, Quinn Hughes and McDavid at least for hart. Possibly a few others.

Like you say - it's an extremely competitive race for the hart trophy this year.

I believe Taylor Hall was the last forward to win the Hart outside the Top 3 in points. He finished 6th.
