It is rare that an 18-year-old defenceman gets time playing for one of the best teams in the KHL but that is exactly what happened for Kirill Kirsanov this year. He played mostly on the third pairing, but still got minutes for SKA St. Petersburg. Kirsanov played 29 KHL games, mostly playing in a defensive role. He scored just three assists. He also played six playoff games, picking up one assist. Kirsanov played four games for the VHL affiliate, scoring a goal and an assist. He also played eight games in the MHL, scoring four assists. In the MHL playoffs, he picked up one goal in two games.

Pronman had him rated 16th!

Kirsanov is an interesting player because he’s a well-rounded but boring player. You’re not going to see him make some end-to-end highlight-reel rush. He’s 6-foot-1 and doesn’t put up a ton of points, but every coach he plays for leans on him. His minutes kept going up at the world juniors, he’s already played for Russia’s national team at the senior level, and he held his own on a good KHL team and got playoff games. He’s very intelligent with the puck, he skates quite well, kills a lot of rushes, and has enough puck skill to play on a power play, although that may not be his role in the NHL. I could see him being a solid two-way defenseman at the NHL level, though. His conditioning is a minor issue. He also signed a two-year extension with SKA. In a sentence, Kirsanov projects as a reliable top-four defenseman who may not put up a lot of offense, but I’m not ruling out him being on an NHL second power-play either.

He sounds a bit like a Russian Faber to be honest.

I love the way, if there is a player we really like and we are within 10 picks or so, we make a move to get the pick. Just reeks of “we know exactly who we want and will do what we can to make it happen. “

on this guy, excuse my ignorance. I assume it won’t be an issue getting him to come to North America from Russia?

Yeah, we never have any problems with Russians.

Like this pick very much, been saying that an awful lot over the past few years.

Seems like our organization has a firm idea of the kind of defenseman they want, and having Kirsanov, Bjornfot, Anderson and Faber as foils for the more adventurous Clarke, Grans, Nousiainen and Spence...

What an outstanding job of drafting defensemen.
