NFL: Derek Carr retires

Some over on the NFL reddit are saying that he couldn't do that as he wouldn't pass a physical. Haven't looked into the specifics.
Maybe a misspell?
He was scratched for the final month of the season. And all players do a year end physical to determine whether their contract for 2025 is guaranteed as most of the vets have years 2-3 guaranteed for injury, so if they can't pass the physical at year end, they can't be cut.

Sounds like for him to play again, he'd need to have surgery and do a long rehab. If he opts to retire, that he can rehab it enough to do things that he wants. Play golf, baseball, etc. Lift some stuff around the house, etc. Possibly some limits, but with $200 mill in career earnings, anything too heavy, he should hire people to move.

His wife posted a video of his first day of retirement. He seems content playing with his 3 sons and 1 daughter. Running and throwing a baseball before heading out for golf.

the recouping of his SB makes no sense. His SB was $28.5 mill. His base salary in year 1 was like $1.5 mill. total payment was $30 million. Players take the SB and a lower year 1 base to help the team as Carr carried just a sub $8 mill cap charge in 2023 for the Saints who needed cap space.

He was to be paid $30 mill per season, just a matter of how the club and Carr agreed to designate the payments.

what is odd is that he somehow passed his year end medical despite being scratched for the final month of the season.

Whatta guy.

Meanwhile, the Saints already have his number away

Let’s be real. He’d be a 35 year old QB in 2026 who just missed all of 2025 and the final few games of 2024 with a shoulder injury. Ultimately, he’d be cut by NO and looking for a new place in 2026.

Ultimately for him, if retiring means no surgery and rehab, if he can live a normal life without it then all the better for him. To collect the saints money he’d have to have the surgery and go through the rehab.

He got well paid for a paper tiger. I have little doubt the NFL was mad sorry they ruined his brother on the altar of the Texans... so they treated the other Carr nice.
